Star Wars: Correct order to view them

I have always been a fan of Star Wars and have watched them in this order:

    Star Wars A New Hope
    The Empire Strikes Back
    The Return of the Jedi
The 3 prequels in that order
    The Force Awakens
    Rogue One
    The Last Jedi

I have watched them then in the order starting with the prequels then the 3 originals and then the later ones in that order and sometimes watch Rogue One between the prequels and A New Hope. Which is the most correct order? I feel there is merits watching them in the various orders.

I always liked the idea of watching them in the Ernst Rister order, but I originally saw them in release order.

I saw the Prequels before the original trilogy. I've seen them so many times now I just watch them in order of episode 1,2,3,Rogue One,4, 5,6,7,8

I often do that order too. I feel the prequels are often underrated and the third especially is a very essential one telling how Darth Vader came about and those 3 films tell the story of how the good Republic became the evil Empire.

Of course, The Empire Strikes Back is considered the greatest Star Wars and one of the greatest films ever made and rightly so. The revelations about Darth Vader (of course, you'll know if you watch the prequels first!), the action and the chemistry between the main characters is what makes it.

The first film now called A New Hope but then called Star Wars was unlike anything ever made before it. It spawned the sequels, inspired the Bond film Moonraker and continued to inspire films like Avatar for years later. A very strong opener and the sequel The Empire Strikes Back as said was even better.

The Return Of The Jedi is also excellent and concludes the original trilogy well. In this film, the exact relationship of Luke, Leia and Darth Vader aka Anakin Skywalker are all made known and Han Solo and his Jabba the Hut story provides a great opening piece of action. There is a bit of an Indiana Jones feel to this film too which is not surprising as Harrison Ford is in it and George Lucas also was involved in the Indy franchise too.

Rogue One acts as a good prequel too. Solo later to be released this year too will give the background on all things Han Solo and should be good too.

The Force Awakens revived the franchise and started the debate on whether the earlier films or this was the best. I feel they are equally good and all part of the same story. Unlike many other franchises (you can watch pre-Daniel Craig Bond, Indiana Jones, Mad Max (as long as you start with the first one) or Dirty Harry films in any order for example), each film does tell a story that links in with events from a film before it.

A curiosity to finish is a film called Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. This came out in 1983 when Return of the Jedi was riding high. Metalstorm featured a character called Dogen who was a cross between Luke Skywalker and Mad Max in a film clearly influenced by Star Wars and Mad Max 2.

    Episode III
    Rogue One
    Episode IV
    Episode V
    Episode VI
    Episode VII
    Episode VIII

    Think that about covers it.

the supercut (not sure if that is the correct name) which condenses episodes 1 - 3 into 1 cohesive film
    Rogue One
    4 - 8

If your determined to go through a whole series in anything release order is always the correct answer.

I did the 'Machete Order' the last I watched these films and thought it worked great.

The order is IV, V, II, III, and VI.

You don't watch Episode I because it's rubbish and more than that, it's unnecessary. But you can slot it in before II if you feel like it. (it is really unnecessary though – nothing important carries over that isn't explained again anyway).

Starting with IV gives you the introduction to the world and the characters as it was intended to do. Then you get onto Empire with the Daddy Vader revelation still "unspoilt", and then you get II and III as a sort of flashback – to learn a bit more about the world and Vader's connection to Luke, ObiWan, and the Jedi. Then you're back to the main story to finish with Episode VI which actually has a proper ending, unlike the very "..." and downbeat ending of III.

None of the new films existed when I last watched those but I guess VII and VIII would naturally come after VI. Not putting it down but I don't think Rouge One really fits. It's related but it's purposefully not a 'Saga' film.
