College Laptop

Hello all, another "Recommend Me a Laptop Thread". I'm (hopefully!) starting Mathematical Sciences in UCC in September, and will be getting a new laptop. I was looking at the Lenovo Ideapads, but noticed they have 4gb of RAM. I remember reading somewhere that college laptops were better having 8gb of RAM, and wasn't really sure what to make of it. Can someone give me a bit of advice, or even general specs to keep an eye out for? My budgets around the 600 mark. Thank you

For 600 almost every laptop you look at will have 8GB of RAM. This is the minimum you should be getting IMO. Don't entertain the idea of a machine with less.

You should be looking for the following:

Intel processor: Specifically a 'Core' processor, which are split into core i3, i5 and i7. The bigger the number, the better the processor. You should also look for the most modern iteration with a processor model number like Intel Core i7 8550u, or Core i5 8250u, the 8 being the important number there signifying that it is 8th generation.
RAM: As said, aim for 8GB, any more is a plus but won't make any huge difference.
Storage: An SSD would be preferable, generally it would be best to get a system with at least 256GB.
Screen Size: This will depend on how portable you need the laptop to be. Smaller makes it easier and lighter to carry. But larger makes the screen easier to read and makes it better to use for extended periods.
