Are zoom macro lenses real macros?

I want to try a bit of macro photography, and have been looking at around 100mm prime macro lenses. However there are plenty of zoom lenses that claim to be macro, and their price tags are pretty good. So are they really macro, i.e 1:1? And are they any good?

Simple answer no they are not, what they are is excellent at what they do plus they also make for a superb prime lens for portraiture. I recommend not getting a macro lens of less than 100mm, from experience.
