Our older brothers 06D car has never NCT'ed it at all. Our older brother lives down the country and seemed to get away with this level of stupidity all along as the car was taxed and insured. He has now changed job and wants to take the car to Dublin but would prefer to take it through the correct channel and have it NCT'ed, taxed and insured. Whats the best approach for him to do this, does he book in an NCT test or fill out a form.

Just book as normal, there will be no issues although depending on the date of first registration he may not get a full test

8 years it's been overdue an NCT!!

    That's just stupidity.

What does this mean, he may not get a full test? He obviously would like to get it up to full requirements before doing the NCT, as per the list below.

    https://www.ncts.ie/media/1013/preparing-for-your-nct.pdf

Also he will have brake pads/discs checked/changed, tyres, lights checked, wipers checked, spark plugs anything else?

The nct runs on the anniversary of the first date of registration, so if the car was regged in Jan and he does the test in June then he will only get 6 months of test.
I wouldn't over think it, just send it in and see what happens.

He might not get a full years test is what he meant.

Note to self: Do not buy an 06D car with only one NCT in 8 years.

Just out of curiosity did he regularly service it or just service it when something broke?

    Why not?
Fact that he didn't do NCT, doesn't mean he didn't maintain car adequately.

Most people in Ireland do the latter.

To be fair to him he has always had it serviced through a local garage. He has never had anything broken either. He bought the car in '08 and the only ever issue he had was getting one flat tyre or 2-3 slow punctures. Hard to believe but true.

You can easily get a court appearance, that's the main thing

I dunno. Hard to believe if you care about keeping a car in good condition if you never nct it.

I don't agree with that. He has maintained the car from the roadworthy point of view. I have seen some tv programs where cars have gone through NCTs and the condition of the car would be questioned.

The NCT is a check of basic requirements at the time of the test. It assesses components which are visible and accessible. It does not replace or purport to replace your responsibility to ensure your car is roadworthy at all times or the regular maintenance that a mechanic needs to carry out on your car. Defects found must be repaired and the car must pass a re-test before the car owner will be issued with an NCT Certificate.

    How so?.

He'll get lots of points on his licence and the car impounded if he gets caught before the NCT.

Yep, that's a very good independent test of safety.

Whilst I'd love to agree with you, I bought a car last year that was tax and NCT exempt from new (due to the previous owners disability, how accurate this is I'm not sure) that was also 2006. Mostly mechanically sound, except for a seized caliper, which had been seized for a very long time. It failed dangerous when the banjo bolt didn't seal properly and pissed fluid in the NCT centre, otherwise it would have went through first time. Front discs were also paper thin. A basic check would have copped this!

Lets not mention the smell inside when I first got it...
