When do you NCT your car? Early or last minute?

Every year I swear that next year I'm not going to leave it till the last minute to NCT my car but for some reason that doesn't always happen.

I'm not doing to bad this year intended to do both cars (mine and wifes) 3 months early but have at least managed to get the wifes in nearly 2 months before its actually due. Mine due about the same time I'll leave until her's is sorted.

Last year the job got put on the long finger and my car didn't get through the NCT until the week before it was out.

So how organised are you and when does your car get put through the NCT.

Usually try and get as long a test as I can. Last of the 2 year ones last so will be doing within 90 days of due date

I send mine in for test 3 months early. Go through the whole car about two days before and replace anything I think might fail even though my car is extremely well looked after throughout the year

I get a piece of paper and colour it in with Crayola....

    Seriously though...

Try and get the extra few months if possible saying that though I completely forgot last year to get the nct before the car turned 10 as would have got the extra year.

It should all depend on when you get the car serviced. For example, if you get the car serviced in June and the NCT is due in December, get the test done as early as possible, i.e. with 89 days to go, that way you're more likely to pass and if you do, you'll have one year plus 89 days to the next test.

Always 2-3 months early so if she fails heavy I can book her in to Hammond Lane.

As early as possible. Gives plenty of time to fix anything that may need fixing.

ASAP. As close to 90 days early as I can. My car is 14 years old. So if it's totally knackered or if it'll cost a lot to sort out I have 3 months

I would normally do it early but this year I completely forgot until the week it was out. Just a lot going in at the moment and it slipped my mind totally Got a cancellation this week and got her tested. Must fix a couple of minor things.

I leave it till the last day, purely because of disorganisation. But I'll try for the 3 months early scheme for sure next time.

    Always early.

I found a great mechanic within walking distance of my house which makes a big difference.

He is very reasonable and quick. Havent had to leave car overnight yet.

Stuck mine (2010 Megane estate) in last week, bang on 90 days before it was due, failed in insecure cv joint, had that tightened for 20quid and passed, so 2yrs 3months nct

i have a Renault where the NCT is due in the first week of January, so that's always done 3 months in advance so I can get an NCT time that suits me.

The Lexus NCT is September, that's done nearer the date as I usually get a convenient slot. I'll get it done in June this year as I'll be selling it once it's done.

At least 2 months ahead of due date. If there's a problem, I'd still have time to sort it.

How does that work. I don't fully understand it, thought it had to be tested before 3 months of the due date. Have an 08 car. Test is out 17 of July.

Can be tested any time. If it is tested within 90 days of the 17th July the new NCT will be valid until 17th July 2020.

If tested outside the 90 day window the new NCT will be valid for two years (for a car LEDs than 10 years old) from the date the NCT is passed.

Would have to be on or after 19th April to be within the 90 day window. (17th April to 17th July is 92 days).

    It’s due in July

Cortect, and passing its NCT any time between 19th April and then will give a cert until 17 July 2020. If it passes after its 10 years old the cert would only be for one year.

Nope. The cert would be valid until 17th April 2020 or 20th July 2019.

If the car was tested and passed on 17th April the NCT cert would be valid until 17th April 2020 as 17th April 2018 would count as early voluntary testing as it is outside the 90 day test window and the cert would be for 2 years from the day of the actual test.

If the car was tested and passed on 19th April the NCT cert would be valid until 17th July 2020 as it is inside the 90 day test window and the cert would be for 2 years from the due date of the test (the expiry date of the current NCT cert i.e. 17th July).

If tested after 17th July the car would be over 10 years old and a cert would only be valid for 1 year from the due date i.e. until 17 July 2019.

The car is question is 2008, if tested on 19th April, it would get a cert only for a year from exipiry date.

True - if it is tested from 19th April on it will only get a cert until 17th July 2019. I was looking so much at the April vs July testing that I missed this year is the car's 10th year. :o

OP could get a two cert (from the date of testing) if the car can be tested before 19th April as it would then come under voluntary early testing scheme and the next test date would be reset to the second anniversary of the voluntary early test.

It might be worth checking if anytest appointmernts become available due to cancellations over the next few days.

The NCT on my 08 car is due the 30th June 2018. If I pass the NCT, for example, on the 25th of April 2018, will the NCT be due on the 25/4/2020 or 30/6/2020?

Cars from four years to nine years and nine months old get a two year NCT certificate. You would have had to have passed the NCT before 1st April to get a two year cert.

If your car passes its NCT on 25th April it is within the standard 90 day test window and the cert will be for one year from the expiry of the current cert i.e. until 30th June 2019.

As early as possible this year - main reason being the fact that my car's 18 years old and has required some rust repair work for the last 2 years, so the earlier I bring it in, the more likely it will pass (the rust will have had less time to spread).

I'll probably scrap it next year though, as problems are mounting up. Had to get the drivers door lock replaced recently (with a 2nd hand one, I no longer have central locking as a result), and now the ABS light is permanently lit on the dash. On that, do they actually test for ABS or is it just a visual for the warning light? If it's just a visual, I'll probably just remove the bulb.

No joy with that plan I'm afraid, they check to see that the the abs light comes on and extinguishes.
