Covering maternity leave primary-holiday pay?

    I'm currently covering a maternity leave for a teacher in primary school. I started the end of February. On my pay form from DES it shows for GROSS EARNINGS- HOLIDAY PAY, SUBSTITUTE-BASIC. What is holiday pay really?

    Substitutes are entitled to holiday pay, (8% I think) for periods when school is closed. One time it used to be incorporated into your ordinary pay but now it is paid separately, hence the note on your pay slip. It covers Chistmas, Easter, Mid-Term Breaks & Bank Hols so what you received must either be for the 19th March Bank hol or for Easter.

    If you are claiming S/W for periods when school is closed they take your holiday pay into account hen deciding what you are entitled to

    12% of your hourly rate is withheld and paid in a lump as holiday pay at Christmas/Easter/Summer.
