After over 25 years in the same place (Public service) I can say with confidence that no, don't expect anything.
I've seen people retire from here in recent years with over 40 years service and not even an acknowledgement from management.
Maybe it's different in the private sector.

It would be normal in my place for people to get a card or something for major milestones

Would've been normal in any place I worked to get something.

Same as gaspode. Nothing for the normal public service employees of the state. But different as you look at the higher ranks.. they even get to write up lectures for their evening clooege lecturing roles. Seemed quite clear to me the lower the rank /grade the more actual work for minimal pay but high payed grades can hardly manage a few e-mails daily in between their outside activities.. privatisation needed to get required work done

    Large corporate environment here.

You get 1 days extra holidays per year (forever) and I think a plaque at 5 years, and again at 10.

Private sector has much higher turnover than public I'd imagine.
Anyone in the company that long is probably an asset in most cases.

Only one place I've ever worked in gave anything for long service milestones, I got a pen, a small bonus and a bottle of wine for sticking it out for 5 years.

My current place recognise birthdays and send a small hamper.

I love the Australian system of long service leave that you are eligible for after 10 and 15yrs experience. After 15yrs most organisations will give you 6mths paid long service leave, and some will give it you a lesser amount after 10yrs. I remember being in primary school and teachers going on long service leave. I used to think they were so old...now if I'd stayed in Australia in my job I would have had my 6mths off for 15yrs

Just googled the origins of long service leave...Long service leave was introduced in Australia in the 1860s. The idea was to allow civil servants the opportunity to sail home to England after 10 years’ service in ‘the colonies’. It was 13 weeks for every ten years of service, composed of five weeks to sail back to England, three weeks of leave and five weeks to sail back.

In the 19th century, furlough as a benefit as it is now known, was a privilege granted by legislation to the colonial and Indian Services. In Australia, the benefits were first granted to Victorian and South Australian civil servants. The nature of the leave allowed civil servants to sail 'home' to England, safe in the knowledge that they were able to return to their positions upon their return to Australia.[citation needed]

The concept spread beyond the public service over the period 1950 to 1975, mainly as a result of pressure from employees seeking comparability with the public service.

I got an extra day of annual leave to mark my 10 year anniversary in my last job.

Then a couple of years later they started five token gestures for major milestones.

    I wouldn't expect it though.

About 10 years ago my civil service department introduced a Long Service award under the "partnership" scheme. It meant that, after 25 years' service, people can select from a number of gifts (cut glass jugs, watches, pens, etc.) and the Sec-Gen presents them annually at a pre-Christmas function (including sambos and cakes - but no jar!) attended by many of the staff. I felt that it was unnecessary, but many of my colleagues, especially the females, really liked it. Ironically, many of the staff who moved in to the Department following decentralisation are strongly opposed to it! Can't please everyone, I suppose.

    Voucher and a celebratory dinner/reception.

Yeah you should but it should be done right or not at all - a voucher or a watch for 10 or 20 years service?

    Crumbs from the table. Insulting.

Should be an all expenses paid holiday or a car.

Hubby in his job over 20 yrs - low skilled and seasonal. He is on a little over minimum wage and it's disgusting to see how they are treated. He had other personal problems over the years but is in a good place now mentally and activally looking for a different job.

If the business is small just give the employee a bump in payment at christmas.

But if you are going to make a fuss over someone giving your business 10 or 20 years of their life a voucher on the anniversary of their start date is an insult. Dont bother.

I work in a large multi-national, at 10 years they give an extra day annual leave (1 year only) and a one off payment of €127 before tax!!!

    Sorry should have clearly stated

No he didn't get acknowledgement of 10 yr service but yes I think he should have. Some kind of pay rise would be welcome at least.

I wouldn't expect it. It would be nice of course, but I wouldn't get upset if I wasn't acknowledged. Remember, that anybody is replaceable.
