Hi all, sorry if this has been done to death...
So I finally found a car that I really like on the website of a SIMI dealer, but I would have to travel more than halfway up the country to get it, which kind of rules out multiple trips to view it. It's a 161 (import) and it's being advertised at 20k.My question is this: would I be an absolute fool for buying it without having an independent mechanic look over it, the garage is giving a 6 month comprehensive warranty and I'm assuming there's the balance of the 3 year manufacturing warranty (Volvo) I know nothing about cars so no point in me trusting myself to spot any issue .......thoughts please!!??

Others may advise differently, but I probably wouldn't bother organising an independent mechanical inspection for a 2016 car if it was being sold by a reputable dealer.

You do only have one year left of the manufacturers warranty should anything major happen it. Could you perhaps do a deal for the dealer to extend the warranty? I think they should be offering you a full years warranty too for such a young car.

I would run a full car history check for sure as its an import.

How would I do that, pay extra to extend it?

I don’t think there would be much issue mentioning the dealer here would there, but as advised please get w full motor check or similar done to confirm it’s mileage and that it was never written off etc.. “some” car dealers have a bit of a reputation for buying written off/clocked cars in the UK and then passing them off here to unsuspecting punters! For €20k it will cost peanuts to get that peace of mind.

No issues mentioning the dealer if you want some feedback.

The dealership is Mount Merrion Cars Ltd......

A 6 month warranty on a 2016 car is pretty lame especially if it's one of those "dealer get out of jail" warranties from a third party warranty company. Also if the car still has the balance of the manufacturers warranty left on it then the short warranty the dealer is offering makes even less sense.

I sold a car to a person in Cork, I was in Dublin....

I took loads of pics but he got me to bring to independent garage, they checked the car and sent report to him....

It only cost him 2-300 euro.

Why not do something like that

Ask for the UK reg, also get them to photocopy the service book and send to you

Ring Volvo UK, I dont know if they keep records of service on Volvos like BW/Audi do

Ring the garages that serviced it and ask them to check the mileage etc over the phone...

As it is 2016 it was before the MOT would need to be done if I am correct, so you can't check that way

Check if it has any Volvo service history from the UK. If it does I wouldn't worry too much - Volvo are very good at covering stuff under warranty and even out of warranty.

Bought the wifes XC60 last year from an independant dealer - UK import with full Volvo Service history (actually bought and serviced in the Volvo dealer 2 miles from where I'm from in the UK, so it was fate). EGR intercooler cr@pped itself a couple of months ago and it was repaired by Volvo Ireland with no cost, despite being almost 4 years old.

Mount Merrion cars are a reputable dealer who've been around for a while. As long as it's clear of finance and drives fine, I'd go ahead if you are happy.

I helped a friend to  buy a volvo v40 from mount merrion cars couple of months ago. Car was an high spec uk import and clean. They provided uk service history by contacting Volvo dealer in Dublin. It was a pretty good experience with them  at the end and I would go back to them.
For peace of mind, we paid someone(http://www.iaea-online.org/) to go and check the car for any body work, etc.  You can do the same.

Pretty sure Mount Merrion Cars are linked to Stillorgan Motor Company who are straight up decent lads.
