Hi, Found a strange crawling creature in my house this evening. It reminds me of a case bearing clothes moth (which I unfortunately have in my house). This guy is black and his ‘case’ is a dark grey/black. It’s a conical shape and he does not appear to be able to turn around in it like a clothes moth. I took a photo with flash and the case almost looks like granite. Any ideas?

    Woodlouse?

I don’t think it’s a woodlouse or a silverfish. I came across a Caddis fly after posting and it might be that. Not sure though because I found it indoors.

Looks similar to a caddis fly larva alright. But I think they're aquatic

@OP, is that your photo of what you found or a picture of a caddis fly taken from the internet for comparison?

If it's your photo then it definitely looks like a caddis fly larva, but it'd be highly unusual to find one in a house.

I googled and it seems there's a land caddis, Enoicyla pusilla, usually found in leaf litter, so it's possible it came indoors on shoes, etc.
(I, too, am familiar with the case bearing clothes moth, sad to say!)

I didn't think Enoicyla pusilla was found in Ireland and is only an accidental introduction in parts of England. Unless things have changed in recent years.

    Ahh, ok!
So would it ever be possible for a native caddis fly larva to survive out of water?

Thank you everyone :) That was a photo of the one I found. For size reference the white paper is a sheet of toilet paper. I contacted Bio Diversity Ireland and Jenny from Moth Garden identified it as luffia ferchaultella - a micro moth.
