If they are the refillable gas containers then they aren't yours to get rid of they belong to calor gas or whoever they were rented from.

The agreement you are supposed to sign when you "buy" a new cylinder is only a rental agreement so you are supposed to return them if no longer in use. In the UK iirc they did give you something back for them but in Ireland - guess what ;) - sfa.

I don't think scrap yards will take them.

I've about a dozen lined up for various projects including making a stove out of one or more of them. The steel they are made of is reputed to be of high quality.

If you ring calor / flowgas or whoever owns them I'd imagine they'll collect them free of charge. You'll have to pay to dump them

I give them away to people that need a spare gas cylinder.

Good point, that sort of explains why I have picked several up on a quite stretch of road just down the road from the local tip.

Woodies make me pay €20 for a deposit for the grey patio gas, maybe you could cash em in there?

The reason you don't get paid for returning them (unless you have a receipt) is certain enterprising people used to collect them from gardens etc., without even bothering to ask the users if they still wanted them.

At least now they rarely disappear overnight and you can have a cooked breakfast the next morning.

I dropped one into the council recycling center a while back.

Dangerous yokes to put in with a pile of scrap.
