Home Printer, Amazon Scam?

So... I ordered a Canon pixma 8750 A3 printer from Amazon. I paid extra to get the one with an additional set of XL ink. The printer hasn't arrived yet, but the ink has (I smell a scam). But the ink that arrived isn't Canon ink, I'm disgusted, it's in cheap packaging with no branding or even instructions and looks and feels cheap as ****.

If the printer ever does arrive, is it worth trying these inks? My opinion would be absolutely not...

What was the Amazon link ? Was it Amazon ? 3rd part seller ? How was the ink bundled? Was it one of those 'people who bought this printer also bought ... (link to cheap ink)', was Canon ink actually mentioned anywhere ?

This is important. Amazon hosts 3rd party sellers which is likely what happened here. However you should be protected through amazon from this kind of thing.

    EDIT: Was this the one:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PIXMA-iP8750-Wi-Fi-Printer/dp/B016MWLV8Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523526700&sr=8-3&keywords=Canon%2Bpixma%2B8750&th=1

"includes extra compatible inks", as opposed to "Includes extra original canon inks".

May not be anything to be 'protected' from.

Unless it specifically mentioned that it was going to be genuine Canon ink?
And the phrasing on that could be quite sneaky.

If that is indeed the one then the 'compatible' bit pretty much by default means 'not Canon' but depending on your expectations may or may not work as well as you'd like, however will work well enough you won't have much of a reason to take us to task over it.

It was a third party seller. The ink was bundled, but I think they have changed the wording of the add now that I have complained (it now says Canon compatible ink) I will check, as I have it saved as a PDF.

I have a new tracking number which says the printer will arrive today. But the last one was for a company that didn't provide tracking... I'm aware of plenty of scams that start like this...

Any thoughts about using this ink if the printer does arrive? I bought it because I have a project that requires it and another set of ink will probably set me back another €100...

If the original ad wasn't clear about the ink not being Canon, then I would contact Amazon support and see what they say. I do think you will get your printer, I don't think this is necessarily a scam, or at least it's not that big of a scam. Perhaps they were purposely vague on the original ad about the ink.

But you have multiple layers of protection here. Amazon themselves and your credit card provider (presuming you used one).

Hard to say really, I've used compatible inks in the past that were just as good as the genuine thing and other ones that were really not so good :(

Having said that I don't think any of them every caused any actual problems.

You might try get an answer from the vendor if they'll replace it if the 'compatible inks' cause a problem for some peace of mind but I wouldn't hold much hope.

Thanks guys. I'll wait to see if the printer arrives and will decide later whether to try the ink...

"Compatible " ink varies tremendously in quality. The biggest problem I have found, through bitter experience, is that the colours vary from the "originals". Which makes colour profiling and matching virtually impossible (with a few exceptions).

If you are not worried about colour accuracy (or printer warranty) then compatibles are fine.

    Otherwise don't touch them (IMHO).

Unfortunately I have found the best way to save money is to buy a printer that uses big cartridges- 75ml plus. But they cost a good deal more. It's more cost effective in the long run but only if you print a lot.

Amazon customer service is second to none for this sort of thing - even when the product comes from a third party seller.

I'd be 90% sure that they will take them back off you and give you a refund without much hassle. Not sure if you'll have to pay the return postage though. That seems to vary.
