I would disregard both the Yaris and the Polo, the 1.0 engine in the Yaris was considered unrefined when it launched 12 years ago. It’s just unexcusable in 2018.
I don’t think the 1.2 in the Polo is a particularly good engine.

I’d be looking at a Kia Rio or Ford Fiesta.

    It’s smaller than a Fiesta / Polo

Rio would be in Fiesta class, Picanto would compete with VW up, Hyundai i10 etc, nothing wrong with them.

No. Skoda Citigo or Seat Mii are "siblings" of the VW Up and would be cheaper to buy. There are plenty of used models available which ought to be within your budget. All three are excellent little cars.

I'd still prefer a solid vw polo if in any accident. Some of those smaller cars wouldn't provide much protection. Polo would hold value and sister in law learned to drive in a 00 1litre a few years ago and kept it for 4 years and did 30k yearly . It was absolutely bulletproof never an ounce of bother. Except the bright red colour was fading badly.. as for power it was quite adequate. Never drove a 1.2. But as a mechanic vw would be top of my list. And never heard anything bad about yaris either. A learner driver doesn't need 0 to 60mph in 7 seconds.. something solid . Reliable & easy to sell on after a while is what any learner needs ..oh &easy to get parts. (Mirrors etc) good luck it's your choice & money. I'd avoid opel &ford you seemed to be on the right path at the beginning but everyone will suggest something different & that's not all bad otherwise we'd all be driving a generic brand and possibly only 1 colour

Where have you been the past 20 years?

Hi colm mcm. Right up at the top with thel last 30 years. Just know how to separate the ok cars from the crap buckets. I could start with long list of unrepaired design f... ups with Ford's and opals but the day ain't long enough. Everyone's different. If more people took advice from dinosaurs like me as you think. We'd be sorted with bad brands

OP a Picabto might be a nice choice. Also the usual mix of Clio, Yaris, Fiesta or maybe even a Suzuki Swift

how about an Opel Corsa(1.0 or 1.2)? Had one a few years ago and was perfect.

Showed the lady all the recommendations, looks like a VW up! Is out of the question.A Kia/Toyota/Ford it’s boiling down to.

A little over budget but I'd be seriously considering one of these if I was in that position.

I just found this vehicle on Carzone.ie http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/suzuki/swift/used-2014-141-suzuki-swift-1-2-glx-waterford-fpa-4468288536317522864

I assume you’re familiar with VWs 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder 1.2 engines and the issues they have.

Also. I wouldn’t agree that the Polo is a cut above most of its rivals in terms of safety. The Euro NCAP ratings show this. The Polo is certainly a very safe car - but then so are most cars in that class.

Going back 15/20 years the Polo would have been behind rivals like the Punto and Yaris in terms of safety. They certainly felt substantial, but that doesn’t translate to them being better in a crash.

In terms of reliability, the warranty given by the likes of Kia and Hyundai (7 and 5 years) speaks volumes, and gives the used buyer reassurance that a used VW can’t offer beyond the dealers used car warranty.

What do you re job they would let that go for? Would €8750 be too much to haggle to? There’s slight wriggle room in her end. The number 4 bus to Waterford can be done

I couldn't say but that would certainly seem a good offer to me. I rate those Swifts highly

No info on mileage or anything. I guess if petrol it will be ostly short journeys?

You could look at electric. Just an option
    Cheaper insurance
    Cheapest tax
    Low fuel cost
Free fuel if you have charge point beside you
Can get cheap entry model with battery rental
Cars come with all extras like sat navs etc
Buying new or second hand get 600 towards charge point installation at home
Potentially free or cheaper tolls coming in next few weeks

    Might be worth considering.....

I know if I was buying my first car now I would consider them

I bought my lad a Seat Ibiza. Think it's 1.2. Grand little yoke, cheap to run and insure. He's on his 3rd year with it now, with no major issues.

No issue with electric but I'd consider it a better idea to learn in a manual car otherwise you're stuck with an auto only license unless you redo the test in a manual again in the future.

    Manual is so 1990's...:p

In a few years time you wont be able to buy a manual unless your driving a truck or tractor.

Things may well change but we're currently in the here and now.

I'd love an electric car though in time.
