Is it an automatic Golf? Seems to be lengthy delays with the DSG gearbox across the VW Group. Mine 4 and a half months, picked it up mid-October.

Took a few phone calls to at least get a reason for the delay, once I found out it was the gear box the wait didn't seem so bad.

Typically you'll be looking at 8-12 weeks from when you order, but it can be a lot longer depending on demand, engine/transmission availability etc. Your dealer should be able to give you a provisional build week not long after you place the order. This is liable to change but will give you an approximate timeframe. Add 4 weeks to build week to get your estimated delivery date.

will they really have to build one especially for ireland though? should be fairly common in the uk

If you ordered one with factory extras or it's a special order then yes you will be waiting. UK models also have a lower standard spec than Irish models.

The wife ordered a new model Polo last November and was given a provisional build of week no. 8. Next update was that the build went ahead and we have been told that the car is currently on the boat from South Africa and should be in the dealers for collection hopefully by the end of next week at the earliest. So that's 6 to 7 weeks from build to delivery if it turns up as promised.

are the uk models really lower standard spec? anyways - mine is just a highline, 1.4 turbo petrol and a set of alloys picked from brochure...with just one or two tiny other things like technology upgrade

I've been in contact with a few dealers trying to order a new Polo or Ibiza and have been told that VAG cannot order any new builds due to non-European VAG vehicles needing to undergo the new WLTP emission test.
Basically unless you're looking for a 191, the only option is what's in stock in the country.
