Use this handy tool! Enter in the fastest you've ever driven, the speed limit which applied at the time and whether or not you were in a town!

Let's see how much everyone would have been fined / banned or points if you were prosecuted according to the German system!

Don't post your actual speed to keep the high horses away (unless you want to).

    I'd have received a €200 fine, 2 points and a 1 month ban.

This should be a nice game :)

€440 fine, 2 points, 2 months suspended license. What do I win?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

    €1280 , 2 points and 3 months suspended.

    Probably not worth it....

    1360 fine

1280e, 2 points, 3month ban. To be honest I could accept that in the case I was caught.

Over here the same offence would of cost me probably a 2+year ban and a complete inability to insure anything legitimately for a few years after that.

    I think it's proportional.
If you do some serious speed, endanger someone or cause a crash, it gets very harsh with a lot of points, fines in the thousands and loss of license for a long time.
And you don't just get your license back, you have to pass the full driving test plus an idiot test first.

    1280, 2 points, 3 months.

I put in 250 kmph which was indicated or very close to it on my old 530i once and only once and it came up as 1280.

Then I realised I don't think it was really doing 250kmph as it exaggerates speed in most cars, and I don't think that car really has 250kmph in it so I reduced it to 240kmph which is 150mph.

Fine reduced to 640 euro then but same ban and points.

Well according to your criteria, the fastest I ever driven was 217 km/h (according to my speedometer) but there was no speed limit, so there would be no fine.

But if you're asking about how much above speed limit I ever was - hard to say exactly but I'd say way over 100km/h above the limit. Even today I was doing 160 km/h on R road with 80km/h speed limit. No fines though, as there were no gardai on sight. But in Germany it would be €640, 2 points and 3 months ban.

    I don't understand this calculator.
Why does it show fines of €1280 or so, if table only goes up to €640 in built-up area and €680 outside built-up area ?

€640 fine, 2pts and 3 month ban. Bought a new car and wanted to top it out once. Empty n7 on a clear day.

1280 euro fine, 2 points and off the road for 3 months, ouch.
Luckily there were no speed cameras around at the time.

+1, max fine in Germany is €640/€680 for 70km/ plus.

Seems a lot fairer than shooting fish in a barrel in a 50kmh zone like two miles outside of a town because town planners can’t plan.

Fines for speeding in town even up to 70 over the limit seem excessively light

    €1280, 2 points, 3 months suspended.

But in reality I hit 330Km/h on a German Autobahn where there was no speed limit. So there would have been no fine/points/ban.
Very law abiding so I am!

Another €640 fine, 2pts and 3 month ban. *Allegedly* When I got a car new to me and wanted to see what it would top out out. *Allegedly* TBH I was going faster as the speedo runs out at 190kms(limited in its country of origin), but going on the gearing and revs *Allegedly* add another 40 kph to that, before I got the fear *Allegedly*.

    *Allegedly*...

    €640, 2 points, 3 months suspended.

So basically I can just do +20 over the limit and if caught pay 30€. and if in a rush do 160 on the motorway and its only 1 point and 120€. I'd be ok with that

We definitely need some much bigger fines here.

When the speed is at least twice as high as allowed, fines above 55 € usually are doubled

    Fine: €440

    Points:2

    Suspended driving licence: 2 months

Is there any way to calculate the likes of the Swiss or Norwegian systems where the fine is based on your income?

No points for that that's the way it should be. I've 5 points for a similar event in Dublin on Sunday at 7am on ncr. I was doing 57kph. Obviously the 5 pointa is for not paying and going to court but still.

The Finnish system has a system called "day fines".

Usually, the day-fine is one half of daily disposable income. The daily disposable income is considered to be one 60th part of the person's monthly mean income during the year, after taxes, social security payments and a basic living allowance of €255 per month have been deducted.

    So it would be:
(((Average net monthly income for the year)/60)/2)-255.

The number of day fines you are fined depends upon the amount you are over, whether it is in a town or outside etc.

In Norway they levy 10% of your annual income on top of a fixed fine amount.

Switzerland (and Finland) operate just on a % of annual income subject to minimum thresholds and severity of offence.

Jussi Salonoja s believed to be the world record holder for the single biggest fine for speeding, he was 40 km/h over the 40 km/h speed limit when caught in Finland in 2004, based on their system he got a fine of €160,,000.

    That's been topped since.

A Swiss millionaire has been handed down a record speeding fine of $290,000 (£180,000) by a court.

A speeding Swedish driver is facing the world‘s biggest ever motoring fine of 650,000 euros - around £538,000 - after being clocked at 180mph while driving through Switzerland.
