Root canal possible failure

Hi all, i had an consultation today with specialist for root canal on upper molar. He was concerned that the tooth may be cracked under the gum but the only way to know for sure would be to start treatment and they would know before full procedure. But the cost would be approx a third of the complete procedure :(

In fairness, i'm happy that he told me rather than going ahead but i wonder what is the success rate with a crack like this? My other option is extraction i guess but i have a lower molar extracted on same side so would rather have avoided. What about implants? Are they very costy?

    Thanks all

    It's possible to get a 360 degree X ray.

CT scans are generally not diagnostic for cracks unless its pretty big, and then probing the gum and plain X-rays usually show it. Its also cheaper than a CT scan just to go into the tooth and see what can be seen.

Thanks, i think i am going to extract. I also am considering orthodontic work and my own dentists thinks that an orthodontist could make the extraction work on this tooth as i'd prob need extractions to make space for overcrowding anyway. I also need a crown an another deeply filled tooth where the filling is shining through. I guess that would be done after braces tough. I think next step is to make consultation with orthodontist and see what they think. $$$$ but hopefully worth it in the end :)

I would strongly advise you get an orthodontic opinion before banking this, there are certain technicial issues about which teeth are removed and how space can be closed down that your own dentist may not be privy to. Defo get it verified before amputating the tooth.

Thanks, yes my dentist said it is normally premolars instead of molars but i guess i will see what ortho says. I still think this molar is still going to end up being extracted though. It doesn't sound like root canal would be successful :(
