the missus opened a door to get one of the kids out and it hit a car door in a carpark the other day. It left a small dent and a 1 to 2 inch scratch.
the other driver sounds like a bit of a nightmare.

its was an 04 "boy racer" car. How much should I offer him so he doesn't go through his insurance ?

It will cost the same regardless of it being 04 or boy racer type of car. It is fairly visible scratch, so ask him to get a legitimate quote and take it from there.

You definitely don't want to ruin your ncb over minor incident like that.

Or offer him some cash and ask to sign a statement that all is sorted.

Has he asked for a specific amount yet?

Its his property and it was damaged, i think he can reasonably be annoyed. I avoid parking next to cars with child seats for this very reason :P.

I would ask for about €500 to avoid going through the insurance. I would need to hire a car while it was in the paint shop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

depends on how much he cares and what actual make/model car it is.

if it was an 04 corsa the lad didn't care about it could be 200 quid,
if its an 04 bmw m3 with an enthusiast owner you could be looking at 1400 quid,

nobody does that kind of door damage by accident OP, fair play to you for atlas acknowledging it happening to the lad who owns the car, but I think words need to be had about somebody being more careful when she opens the door.

this was on saturday and theres been no contact yet.

I was going to ring him tonight but I haven't a clue as to what might be a fair amount.

Plenty of places allow you to send in pictures for a quote. Do that, and you'll have a good estimate.

I’d say you’re looking at minimum €500 unfortunately there is a dent that needs to be pulled it then blending the door back into the rest of the car.

I'd agree. These kind of jobs are never cheap to resolve.

Try One of the invisible repair companies, I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

    I just rang her.
She wasn't a nightmare at all, really nice actually.

It was her husbands car and shes going to talk to him tonight to see what he wants to do .

thanks for the replys . I really hope it doesn't cost anything like €500 as I don't have that kind of money.

It's up to the owner of the car to decide what they want to do. Not OP.

Read the whole thread, please. The op overreacted at first, but they are on good terms now ;)

So you think that a quote should not even be got? It's not your decision is it? As long as both parties are happy 😊 should be good to go, the car is thirteen years old so matching for that small scrape would probably be best from Dial a Dent or similar. Many major garages trust them to carry out invisible repairs.

if that bad a door ding happened to me, they'd be buying me a brand new door shell, painted and fitted at a main dealer just to teach them a lesson.

Nay, 500 or 1k would teach a lesson.

Let's not go into extortion mode!

Going your route it could have been declared a write off.

depends on the car I suppose, my Range Rover it would probably be a 2-2.5k job which wouldn't write it off , but a car worth less than 5k id probably say 1 grand in cash and leave it at that.

I agree to an extent, and I definitely am against damaging other people cars this way. Some ding tbh.

Yet taking the driver to the cleaners just for the sake of it is a bit over the top (imo).

More a generalisation and not specific to the OP query but it absolutely wrecks by head how people seem to be so nonchalant about this.

I would be irate if that level of damage was caused to my car.

I find myself either parking at the quieter end of a car park, or finding a well looked after car that I know the owner will have a similar respect for.

And then when I find a car far too close for comfort I tend to estimate the arc of the car door beside me to see of there is any scuffs. And the ridiculous thing is it's not even that rare I would see a mark.

Those automatic door protectors should become standard on cars, because spatial awareness or consideration is not standard in people......

I suppose it depends on the person, personally im sick to death of the irish culture of just swinging doors open and hitting other cars, its infinitely more common here than other countries, if you hit up one person for a crippling bill and they talk about it over dinner, it may stop another 5-10 people from carelessly letting doors fly open or the infinitely worse cohort of self entitled parents who think getting their kid out of a child seat warrants gouging another car.

    But it probably won't. People don't give a ****.

They don't even realise it is a thing.

I had shouted at my passengers for getting out of the car in a very damaging fashion, they are ****ing clueless. No insurance claims will fix that. Most of this happen when the other car is empty. That's were these muppets shine.

The op missus was (probably) only found because the other driver was sitting in the car.

€400 for the dent repair......and about €20k for the pending whiplash claim ;)

Joking aside, hopefully based on the above they will be reasonable and not take the p1ss.

It's a €250 max.. Little bit of work, possibly filler not pull.. I had a similar but worse damage job done to my door 3yrs ago and, it was filler, paint no blending just 1 door €200.. On off during the day total 3hrs work..

    Edit: Possible €350/400 inconvenience included!?!?

    Well, that could cause delays.
If the other guy thinks he's being taken for a ride and the other guy wants to just piss against his leg, they would go through insurance, contest the claim, ask for an assessor to inspect the damage, the insurance might want a particular garage, they might dispute the claim amount and if the car is a rust-bucket, declare it a write off and offer a pittance as market value.
This could be counter productive, take a long time and end up with less money.
Despite what a lot of people think, conflict resolution is not shouting, waving of arms and trying to punish the other party or take them for every possible penny, they'll just raise their shields and dig in and you have a much bigger fight on your hands.
Of course if you are anything like your namesake, I wouldn't want to piss you off. :D

Some big numbers being thrown around here. If the injured party just wants it fixed then it shouldn't be too much.
If they want to take the piss then they're actually well within their rights to do so. Depends on the other party really.

They can't declare a third parties car a write off.

    Of course they can.

    Say car value €1000.
    Damage repair cost €3000.

Do you really think insurer will pay €3000 to third party?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

My last two cars had rubber edges around the edge of the door to prevent me dinging other peoples doors. My car still got dinged, but I never dinged anyone elses car.

But it's not just Ireland. Seen it happen in France, the UK, Italy, and over here in Canada. I pay the extra tenner when getting rental insurance to cover the excess because of door dingers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,365 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Some Skoda models have door protectors pop out as you open the front doors. Why this isn't on more cars I don't know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭flatty

I absolutely hate it, and will park a good bit away to avoid parking beside another car, but car parking spaces seem to be getting smaller and smaller. It maybe just me getting older and older.

It is his wife... not a child. I think she can probably comprehend it without needing a "talking to".

I have seen the picture, I am pretty confident she will never do it again after the hassle of repair and payment etc... People make mistakes, we learn from them.

The idea that he needs to "talk to her", is this 1950s Ireland... maybe he should just tell her to stay in the kitchen from now on

    I love it.
Your missus damages another car through either negligence or ignorance and yet you describe the person who’s property was damaged as a nightmare.

    A genuinely Irish response!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,635 ✭✭✭donegal.

thanks for the comments regarding how much it might cost. I think it looks worse in the picture than it really was, but it was bad enough to leave a dent.

But as for the other comments? theres a lot of high horses out there.

The wife was lifting a child out of his seat and the wind caught the door and slammed it into the next car. accidents happen. She'll have learned a lesson whether shes taken to the cleaners or not. In 20 years of driving this is the first time something like this has happened , hence this thread as we've no experience.
so will I be giving my wife "a good talking to"? no.

The other driver jumped out of her car very irate (justifiably so). shouting and taking pictures of the insurance disc (as she should). Its very hard to come to a amicable outcome when someones demeanor is like that. Thats the only reason I thought it could be a nightmare sorting it out. She did nothing wrong and I never implies she did, or that there was anything wrong with how she reacted.

I never said she was a boy racer. My wife didn't now model of car it was but described it boy racerish. In fairness I knew what it meant. That even though it was an oldish car it was obviously much loved and would want to be repaired properly.
