How do I apply for a Learner Permit?

Ok so I passed my theory test.

I got the paperwork for applying for the learner permit. I recently had an eye test and have had my eyesight report form filled and stamped by my G.P.

What do I have to do next to get my learner's permit?

Book a appointment with you local NDLS center , you can book online .

Thanks. Do I definitely need to pre-book an appointment or can I go in without any appointment?

How long to get permit after this? Is the permit posted out to the applicant?

What documents do I need to bring with me to appointment with NDLS?

If you use the Google box and the Ndls website you will see all the answers.

If you have the form for the permit it tells you what you need to bring to the ndls centre. You can pre-book online for an appointment or drop in - drop in may mean pre booked appointments may go before you but there shouldn't be too long a wait.

You MUST have a Public Services Card. If you don’t have one already you need to get one.

You MUST have a Public Services Card. If you don’t have one already you need to get one.

I would presume OP has one considering you need one for the theory test anyway, but the PSC card isn't mandatory for the NDLS centre. They reversed that decision a few weeks ago.
From the 9 April the public services card (PSC) may replace the requirement for certain documentation when applying for a driving licence/learner permit. An applicant will have two options to validate their identity and residency during the application process.

If you do not have a PSC you may have to bring documentation to prove your identity, address, PPSN, as well as confirmation of your residency entitlement. List of acceptable documents are available here.

I have a Public Services Card, it was a requirement for sitting the theory test.

When booking online do you have to pay, or can you pay when you attend your appointment?

I wouldn't bother booking an appointment. I only had to wait for about 10 mins to be seen without an appointment.

Thanks, I got all sorted out today in the N.D.L.S. I was told I should expect to have my permit in the post in a week to 10 days from now.

They will automatically issue you a learner permit for every learner category you are entitled to hold - in your case, that's cat B and cat W - cars and tractors.

Thanks very much! :) Just don't want my application to be delayed, or rejected, lol.

How will they know what category you are applying for? I am applying for a learner permit for a car.

When the customer service representative in the NDLS was going through my paperwork today at my appointment, they did not pass any remarks on it.

Fingers crossed it will all be fine.

Your theory test only covers cats B&W. It's also possible that the agent ticked it without asking you seeing that you have no other categories you could add. The reverse is if you ticked every single box for every single category, you still only have B&W so that's what they'd issue.

Imagine next year you handed in the theory test that covers [all] buses because you wanted to drive a minibus but you forgot to tick the box again, you would get a learner permit that covers cat D1 (the category you wanted) plus cat D (big buses) and also BE (cars and trailers) because at that stage you would have the prerequisites for cat BE - a car theory test and a full B licence. They won't contact you, they'll just add whatever you're entitled to have based on your circumstances on the day.

Thanks very much for replying. At the NDLS yesterday, I had to provide a copy of my theory test pass certificate. My theory test was (obviously) for the car category also.

As I say, the customer service agent I dealt with, did not pass any heed, or ask me to clarify a category while going through my paperwork, just told me I should expect the permit in post in about a week to 10 days time.

    Fingers crossed it's ok :)
