These coin machines have a hefty commission attached to them. If you want to be cheeky, the automatic tills at tesco and dunnes don't charge a fee and can take all the coins that you have time to slot in there. (probably best to not go in there when there's a queue)

there should be no charge for lodging coins as a non commercial customer (as long as you've bagged them up properly). The inconvenience is in bagging the coins and then getting to the bank during their awkward opening hours.

Banks charge retailers/commercial customers for handling coins, it's about 2-3% depending on the bank, and they charge for both lodging and withdrawing coins.

Maybe try your local shop they get charged for getting bagged coins so if you bag them they may take them off you win win to both you get you coins changed they save on the charge at bank for changing.

My local pub owner was only delighted to take the coins - he actually asked me after he overheard me saying I had to take them to the bank. Apparently he gets charged for coin supply?!

Yes, that's right - businesses have to pay to lodge or get coins.
