Rail Smart Card

I'm obviously not a smart rail user...
I have an all services Irish rail + luas smart card.
Should I be tagging on and off after journeys?
Tagging doesn't seem to work on the luas anyways.
I've contacted luas, Irish rail and tax saver customer services and have got conflicting advice.

    1. You don't need to tag on, but it will speed things up during a ticket check as the card will show OK, otherwise its a few more seconds to check the product list. You might get some hassle from the inspectors

    2. You will need to tag on/off to ensure the card recieves any updates, i.e. next years ticket

    3. Tagging on and off does help build up a lot of details of journey patterns which track demand and flows

Why not just get a Leap card?

Is it a Leap Card or one of the branded Luas/Irish Rail ones?

    It's not a leap card.
It's an Irish rail smart card and has 'all services and luas' printed on it.
It also has my photo on it.
I have a long commute so it was the most efficient ticket to get through tax saver.
I've tried to tag it on the luas, and the machine doesn't seem to read it; it doesn't beep.

Can I ask why don't you get a personalised Leap Card for Taxsaver. Is your station outside the Leap Card zone?

    Yes.

I have what I have now anyways.
Wish I could get a straight answer on how to use it!

The taxsaver point to point tickets were meant to have transitioned to leap years ago. This includes stations outside of the short hop zonr. How long have you had this Irish rail one for? It also wont work on luas. They'll only accept the leap card. I think you should have been given an extra ticket to use with luas.

You should go to whoever admins the taxsaver scheme where you work and get them to make sure you've got everything in order. Could find yourself fined for not using the right ticket.

Thats a strange one. Id be asking the NTA what they're playing at before Luas RP try to fine you when they can't read it.

I'm sure that the grey smart cards have been done away with and any renewals would have got the green leap cards.

    Thanks for all the replies.
The card was just issued last week.
I haven't had a chance yet this week to follow up with tax saver.

    The plot thickens.
Just had card checked on the luas and no problems.
The checker did not attempt to scan it. I asked him about it and he said it shouldn't have been issued, but as it has 'expires march 2019' on it, it's ok.
    So I guess it's ok.

Its ok but Irish Rail shouldn't be issuing any domestic season ticket on the old 'grey' cards.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the card's gold, not grey.
