    Hi all,

My old man just turned 70 so he has to get his licence renewed. He has been to the GP and has all the paperwork in order. He intends to call into the NDLS office tomorrow to get the renewal.

Only issue is he is going to the US next Monday and has a car available to him over there - not a rental. How long does it take to get the new licence into your hand?

Is his old licence still in date at the moment (is he renewing early?). If it is still in date on application, his current licence will be given back to him and would obviously be valid until his new one arrives.

If it's out of date today, it would be a miracle if he got it even by next Monday. There's just literally no way of getting it processed any faster than that. The NDLS have SLA agreements, the processing people in Cork have SLA agreements and the printing company have SLA agreements and even if they were perfectly aligned on a given day, it's unlikely to arrive before next Monday. There's also no emergency fast-tracking system he can use. The absolute quickest it would ever arrive to him would literally be a full week of 5+ working days.

If it's still valid - make sure to get it back until the new one arrives.

They will take it automatically if you dont ask for it back. If it's out of date they will take it automatically...
