    Hi guys,

I'm looking to start a proper career instead of doing all these nixers. I am looking for advice/feedback on careers that I think might suit me.

I'm a mum of 2 boys (8 and 6) who are in school and I've decided I'm done with waiting tables or shop assisting as I'm in my late 20's.

I'm pretty sure I want to work with children however I have tried childcare roles and supervising groups and found Id rather work with them on a more one to one basis.

My eldest son has Aspergers and I've been very interested in the therapies he's taken part in. So I am considering the likes of Speech and Language therapist, Occupational therapist or something similar.

I'm an extrovert and when I was in school I did survey/test/class which suggested I should go into psychology but i feel like I would be unable to leave the work in the office. The same stands for social care/worker.

I'm looking for any ideas on a way forward or other career suggestions. I'm keeping an open mind. Thanks in advance.

My best advice would be get work experience. You may not enjoy the realities of day to day life in those careers or may love just one and then it’s your decision made. OT and SLT salaries etc are all online. Have you a degree already (in any area)?

Yes in childcare. But it just wasn't the right way to go. Is it possible to get work experience in something where vulnerable children are present??

It wouldn't be possible to get work experience in an area you are not connected with in any way. Can you get in contact with an SLT and OT to get a proper insight into it? I have a friend that did that before she started studying Speech and Language therapy. She loves it but I know the course was tough going. It is incredibly academic and very medical, which surprised her.

These people work with lots of different populations not just children! OTs work with adults also and not just adults with special needs so it may be possible to get some work experience. Even if you talk to different OT/SLTs you will get a good idea of whether you will like it or not. Yes but I asked about the degree as you can do a 2 year conversion course in UL if you have a degree look it up. Best of luck!
