Seeking advice on price for selling Subaru

Hi, I wonder if anyone could give me any advice on setting an appropriate figure for selling my car. I’ve looked at carzone and donedeal but the prices vary so widely with Subaru’s and I don’t know what other cars might be comparable. I have no idea where to position it and I’ve never sold a car before other than trading in my car in a garage.

The car in question is a 2009 2.0 litre Subaru Legacy estate. There’s 107,000km on the clock, NCT until August 2019 and motor tax until October 2018. I would really appreciate what your thoughts might be on pricing.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it’s diesel. Apologies for omitting that!

Unfortunately a diesel Subaru from that era doesn't have a great reputation for reliability. The fact it's got low mileage and being an estate will still make it appealing however imo.

I'd price up how much it would cost to import a similar car from the UK including VRT and then subtract about €500 from that to make it more tempting than a buyer going to the UK for one themselves. See what interest you get then and reduce the price a little until you get a bite.

I have been looking at these cars on various sites lately and like you say the prices vary hugely from sub €5k to €12k (ridiculous dealer price which no one would ever pay) so you have to be somewhere in the middle.

The problem you also have is that there is a considerable amount of Legacy (2008-2010) diesel cars for sale which have blown engines which causes alarm bells for anyone looking to buy one.

If I were buying one then I wouldn't be willing to pay anything over €6k even for a low mileage 2010 example as at the back of my mind the weak engine is a concern and a rebuild is a minimum of €4000 inc labour.

I know someone who recently bought a 2009 saloon version, 150k kms on the clock, FSH from a main dealer. The car was initially advertised around the €7k mark but was sold for just under €5k.

    I have a 2008 Legacy advertised on adverts.ie for €6750

I had the same issue in that I didn't know what to advertise is for and also people always try to low ball you with insulting offers (especially on adverts)

I have 2 people 'watching' the ad and 3 have it 'saved' on donedeal. But nobody contacted me yet.

I probably have it priced too high but I can drop it of I want to. Its very hard to go the other way.
If you advertise for 3k nobody is going to offer you 4k. That much is certain.

Its not easy. Good luck with the sale.

Gut feeling would be advertise at €4999 and don’t give much off after that. (2008)

My brother paid 5650 for a 2012 AWD saloon last month. The car was for sale months. I don’t know if an estate will be an easier sell, or if the low miles will be a particularly helpful thing. People seemingly just don’t want them.

I can't understand why people wouldn't want them. They are a lovely car to drive.

They are notoriously unreliable (the diesels) and, IMO, the Subaru barnd has a bit of an (undesirable, to some) image attached to it still from earlier days.

    Perceived brand image
    Higher road tax
    Expensive parts
    Higher fuel costs
    More dated interior
    Small dealer network
    Not the darling of roadtesters
    A left field choice
    Expensive new
    Poor residules

Take your pick of the above. FWIW I'd love a new Outback but at about €45k new I could think of better ways to burn money.

Maybe it would be worth mentioning in the ad that the injectors were replaced already?

They were done by a main dealer in Feb 2015 @ 160k km.

    It now has 224k

Too expensive for an 08 unfortunately. If you want a sale then you need to drop to €5500 and hope to get north of €5k for it.

As for people saving/watching ads, I do that all the time even though I'm not currently in the market to buy a car...its like a hobby
