    Hi all

I'm currently trying to sell my petrol 2013 c class online, I got an email enquiry from someone asking about the car and some strange log book questions.

After asking all the normal questions, person asked for me to send photos of both the inside pages of the log book, I responded saying I was uncomfortable sending such information but cut out things like the vin and engine number and them sent a photo. Basically the only information I sent was the info you'd get from cartell.ie...person them responded looking for the number on the front page of the log book, and also a photo of their driving licence to emphasis that they are legit buyers.. I've refused to send in the log book number, I doubt they'll respond as I'm sceptical they're genuine.

Just wondering if this person is trying to scam me and if I had sent them all the info, how would I be scammed, they've not asked for bank details or anything like that etc

Could be trying to clone it??? Tell them to view it if they want the rest of the info. You've been very reasonable up to now.

Had the same selling my car, guy was asking all the right questions but was never really answering mine and then started looking for copies of the log book. Once I refused that was the last I heard of him. Was wondering what sort of scam it was though maybe they would try sell a clone of the car to someone and use the copy documents to back it up? Just noticed you got a copy of his drivers license I got one too I'll dig mine out and PM you the name see if its the same

He sent me a copy of his licence unprompted.. I have a few garda friends and they checked the licence and said that the name, licence number and date of birth were all legit.. They said not to send any extra information that wasn't already available on cartell... The supposed seller asked for the log book number so that his garda friend could do a check on everything, I told him no and haven't heard back since.

My garda friends said that no garda can do checks with a log book number without going through Shannon and the data protection act.

I felt from the beginning that it was a scam, but the licence is legit, so not 100% sure

If they have not even viewed the car it would seem very odd to be going seeking the log book, after all you could be selling the cloned car, they should first view it, confirm the VIN matches the logbook and then proceed with whatever checks they want.

Sending the license unprompted was exactly what happened in my case too! Definately something going on here. I asked for a pic of the license held up against the ad and that was the last I heard of the guy.

That was my guess too but I wonder what their end game is?

Exporting stolen cars possibly? Papers needed to import them into the destination country? Only a guess but sounds dodgy. I say seller beware in this case.
