Batman V Superman - Recent Snyder Comments

Zack Snyder has recently been answering questions on Vero (whatever the hell that is) about BvS. Some of the main points so far:
On why Wayne Manor was deserted and derelict:
"I think his father commissioned the Lake house as a gift to his mother a place built by her favorite architect and she loved it when Bruce turned 18 he moved in he ordered Wayne Manor be left to decompose."

On a painting above Bruce's bed:
"Here's an easy one: The Mapplethorpe above his bed I chose to represent the erotic as a drug that Bruce uses sex to momentarily forget his pain"

On why Batman used a spear against Superman:
Snyder posted a picture of the crucification of Jesus where a soldier stabs him in the side with a spear

On the Robin costume in the Batcave and if a Jason Todd subplot was cut or planned:
"what makes you think that's Jason Todd?"

On the Knightmare scene and what caused Superman to be evil:
"Or if someone lost someone close to them they might become Susceptible to a certain Equation and blame a certain Bat for events that a too soon Bruce would know nothing about."

On if Lex killed his own father:
"we feel the same about lex taking out his dad"

On the dream scene of young Bruce falling down the well:
"The idea that, in the dream, the righteous man, the good man, seeks justice but that quest for justice lead him into darkness and his own moral code is in question or may only be a construct of his grief. So the lie of the light becomes justice = light. For Batman, it's the opposite."

To be honest, to me most of that just shows that Snyder really lost the run of himself with the film and did things for the sake of it rather than it fitting characters.

Thank god this guy lost control of the franchise.

    Batman as Longinus, FFS.

Yeah, because there wasn't enough religious iconography in the film with Superman being referred to as a god 586 times.

It's the latest social-media app de jour, apparently has blown up in popularity recently, particularly from the online creative community (artists, musicians etc.). It seems to stem from a general dissatisfaction with Instagram's more recent changes (such as the fact you can't just look at photos in chronological order anymore - which is pretty bloody annoying TBH).

As to the interview, well it's certainly consistent with Synder's other pseudo-intellectual blatherings; it was clear just watching Man of Steel & BvS that the levels of pretension had gone through the roof.

Himself and WW being referred to as Gods is not irregular based on the source. Whether the references were heavy handed is another thing.

I find Snyder's fascination with stuff like the crucifixes and the spear to be curious. It's an interesting interpretation if nothing else where it's expected that a director puts his own stamp on a mythos. Nolan did the same.

I don't begrudge Snyder discussing the films with his fans anyway, don't see the harm. Seems to be enjoying himself.

Oh it's definitely that I feel it was done heavy handed. It was noticeable in Man of Steel, but it was shoved down the audience's throats in BvS.

What a load of crap those answers are, the Synder fan(atics) will lap that excrement up though.

I honestly didn't feel like that and I'm non religious. Again, it's down to director licence. Far bigger problems in Snyder's films than his religious allegories.

I honestly didn't feel like that and I'm non religious.

Based on this site and the script for the film (as this site doesn't include descriptions or who is saying which line), the number of times the following words are mentioned:

    Superman - 29
    God/Gods - 18 (24 - 6 uses of "Oh my God", or "Dear God")
    Batman - 3
    Bat - 15 (23 - 8 where the letters bat are part of a non-Batman related word)
    Devil - 4

Just saying, there are so many instances where Supes is referred to as a god, or a religious analogy is made. Lex's whole motivations and most of his big speeches are based around it. It really stood out for me while watching the film because I felt it was so overdone, especially when you add in visual things like Superman floating above the family on their roof during a flood, the painting in Lex's house, the statue of Superman that Wally sprays "False God" on.

I felt it was overdone too.

It also kind of felt like Snyder thought he was doing this big surprising think piece when Superman-as-god has been a running commentary for 15-20 years.

I mean, they did a book about him called Kingdom Come, for Kal El's sake.

I still think the biggest issue with the film was it was likely originally going to just be MoS 2 with Lex creating Doomsday, and the whole Superman-as-a-god thing was the central theme of the film. Then they were forced to make it Batman V Superman and instead of starting from scratch, they just added Batman into it. Then they were forced to make it BvS: Dawn of Justice and had to add more JL-related stuff into it. And what could have been a great Superman movie became bloated with everything that was added to it to the point where any real theme or story. And every time they added stuff into it, they didn't remove redundant stuff (like Lois tracking down the origin of the bullet) to counterbalance it.
