Can you drive an untaxed car to a scrapper?

I've heard before there are certain exemptions to road tax, such as taking it directly to and from an nct centre. Anyone know if that applies to taking it to be scrapped too? More specifically to a car dealer who is running a scrappage deal on the purchase of a new car?

It’s only illegal if you get caught.

Don’t those scrapage schemes require tax and Nct for the cars being traded in?

When I availed of a dealer (not state) scrapage scheme the only requirement was to own it and "to drive her through those gates". Ask the dealer, maybe arrange to have them collect or tow it directly from your home, as it will not stay in their forecourt anyway.

Legally, there is no waiver. It has to be taxed, insured and with a valid NCT.

The car is not for definite going to be scrapped, it's only a term they use so you might as well be driving it going to work on the M50 and be caught, same penalty.

The driver nearly always must match the card used and the address must also match from license to card.

Aviva can be good but always ring to explain and check first.

That I assume is for insurance. There's no exemption for tax and road use.

How long is the tax out of date op?

If it's just couple of weeks you are risking a fine of 60 or 80 euro... I would probably do it.

If you asked the dealer they would probably send someone to collect it if you didn't want to risk driving it. I work in a main dealer and that's what we would do if the customer isn't keen on driving the car in

My car was 4 days out of tax and I drove it to get scrapped...

I didn't get caught driving it so I can't say for sure what the outcome would have been but I did make sure I had the documents on my new car, the emails re the scrappage offer and the old tax/insurance/nct discs with me as pleadings just in case.

A few days out is normally looked away. Even 2-3 weeks. More than a month usually a FCN, more than 2 and they will scrap it for you :)
