Being a sturdily independent critter who would not survive in "sheltered accommodation", I am seeking knowledge on what help is available in the home etc.

The current setback makes it clear what help I need long term. I have never asked for this before. Always there has been some way through. Someone who offered help in the way I needed it

SO! I need ONLY a supply line. Many years ago in the UK a home help would do my shopping when I was housebound. That is all I need, it really is.

Is that even a possibility here please? And who do I contact?

Trying V de Paul and Age Action currently.

    Just need a .. friend...

Blessings and thanks to all here for kindness and understanding. Makes it possible to be safe.

Contact your Public health nurse. Gatekeepers for a lot of help at home.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

If you post the general area somebody might be able to post local groups that offer help. I know in my local area the Meals On Wheels service also offer a shopping service and a "ring a ride" taxi service to supermarkets.
Hopefully you can find the help you need!

Hi Graces, the HSE provide home care packages. An assessment of needs is carried out and if deleted suitable the service will be given and for free. The only thing is I think they are for quite high dependency people to help them remain at home rather go in to nursing care. So personal care, making sure the client isn't alone for long periods of time, maybe overnights, that kind of thing. They may provide a lower service though.

Is it just someone who can do your shopping that you need?

I emailed them and am waiting but am almost certainly too far out to qualify. And I would love the more personal touch

Cannot afford centra prices. and there are things I need that the smaller shops do not have
Emailed V de P. They offered me free food from the food bank if i collected it....
Emailed Age Action last night also

I am on a small offshore island which gets interesting! But am not asking anyone to come over; the system for deliveries is to liaise with the ferryman and take the stuff to the pier to him. Works great eg washing machines and he delivers to the door.

I met the Public Health Nurse last year so that is a thought.

    TYVM everyone!

Yes. totally . And only every 2-3 weeks. As I have been doing.

Interesting. Age Action, the national organisation, see https://www.ageaction.ie/ "do not have any contacts in your area."

Ah well! At least I know now. They offer to contact "other community agencies in your area, " so I said yes, but have already tried that.

    Please God tesco come through!;):D

Poor West Mayo... I always wondered what folk meant by rural Ireland being neglected.

Wonder if my TD knows. he is Minister for Rural and Community Affairs ..

Age Action contacted a local community group who gave them some info that is totally incorrect and not accessible. I always knew they had no idea what goes on over here . I know the head of that group and she advised me : "They eat strange things over there"

So I give up on them as going round in circles makes me dizzy ...

What about applying for one of these types of houses in a community/town setting where you would have easy access to amenities, shops, medical care, etc. It is not "sheltered housing" as such in that all residents live independently but in some cases meals, activities and the like are provided but it is at the individual resident's discretion to partake. It might be worth looking into.

Just had an inspiration.. Please God this works..It is rather devious..

There is special crossing each week for shopping ... a minibus etc to a town ... I cannot do that BUT wondering if I can piggyback a delivery on that! It is supervalu but that would do for now. Their cat food etc is OK

I mean how can they say no? The bus comes back to catch the ferry and they will have bags of shopping and the ferry man has to pass my door...

lol ! They are online and take credit cards ... next week !

It'd help if you let us know this, and perhaps which island. Otherwise any and all recommendations will be for non-island services.

If you're going with the SuperValu option, sign up for their loyalty card, they send out vouchers in the post every 3 or 4 weeks of "spend €50 and get €8 off, spend €30 get €5 off etc". Also look out for their "daily basics" options on food stapels - tinned food, pasta, cereals, etc - just as cheap as Lidl or Aldi. Treat yourself with their ready meals - more expensive than Tesco or Dunnes but better quality. On the cat food options - go with the SuperValu own brand, 2 for 1 on their tins of cat food, so it works out at 32 cent per tin, we get that for our cat all the time, any questions let me know

am ahead of you there! I prefer tesco but supervalu is fine.. thanks to LIDL al the main items are at standardised price

Ready meals there are too expensive; at some stag e will get to Dunne's again.

Have emailed various re the community bus. makes sense but a new idea

Such a relief if this works

Supervalu have a click and collect service, if you were able to order online then they have all your shopping ready to be collected by someone in store so that might help either with the bus or if you knew anyone who went regularly and would literally just pick up the shopping for you.

Hoping for that . Have emailed and will follow it up. In an area of very low population so this really is the only option. The ferry/bus goes in once a week and I can buy in for 2 weeks
    We shall see.

I never realised the real meaning of "rural neglect" Makes life hard on old folk and disabled folk

There’s a lot of discussion about housing in the media at the moment. There’s usually suggestions of housing people in the wilds but your situation shows the down side of this. Future planning is important, especially the availability of services as we age.

Good Luck. If I lived nearer you, I’d gladly put your shopping on the ferry for you.

Blessings and thanks for that kindness. Sitting here exhausted and almost in tears; this all is and has been a draining and demoralising experience. Does not make for feeling supported and cherished in old age. At present I am just able to make food etc and am expected to jump through all kinds of hoops .

And this applies to all with chronic illness surely. We need some basic support

Have a look at the web site for Age Action
    https://www.ageaction.ie/

"for all older people" Not if you live in Mayo apparently is what they told me.

V de Paul also promise what they do not give... Wonderful to offer me all the food
I need from the food bank in Ballina.. As long as I collect..

Please God this works through this week but I am not relying on it . Short of a few things but was well stocked for the winter.

    How do others here manage?

I have always said just that in threads. Even before this happened. You would see disaster putting town folk in the wilds.I am used to it in all its aspects. Needs very careful planning and provision .

Would you consider posting in a local Buy and Sell page on facebook? Or one of the local community pages on facebook. I've often seen people reach out for help there and someone would usually be able to help.

Kind lady, but I do not have that kind of. ..energy. That is the problem with all of this, that so many organisations are unaware of what M.E is like. You stop being able to think.. zombies have M.E...

Had one email from y;day from supervalu and have sent off a letter to a community leader here and it is up to them now.

Looking back, my whole life has been dominated of late by simply getting food shopping done and i have got home to literally collapse without unpacking and spend 3days abed in pain. Not healthy.. Need to enjoy other things... to try to plant a garden.. bliss.
And a sneaky look in my cupboards shows that as long as I can eat rice and pasta? Lots of dried foods...and flour etc . Sultanas..

Finally have heard from the manager of the supervali island folk go to each week. Hopefully sorted.. many a slip I know but..

God helps those who help themselves..

    We shall see this Thursday.

NBI have posted the cheque etc and emailed the list. They had never heard of the click and collect idea...

I also wrote a somewhat pithy letter to one of the so-called paid community workers here.. I have no doubt there will be silence ... lol...

Woke to an email from the Manager of the supermarket on receipt of my shopping list.. "Consider it done"

    HUGE grin here!

Two months on and the system is working great. We have it honed to a fine art and it really puts no one to any extra work as the ferry man has to pass my door so drops the boxes off .

Nothing but kindness and that helps so much.

I have my own shopping assistant now too in the shop.

Am still under the weather and at present without transport so am content with it all now and when I am able for the mainland will leave the bulky shopping as it is so I can enjoy an outing ..

    So all is well...
