Do you have to be doing a certain course to be able to apply for Erasmus in UL? I'm looking at Financial Maths or Comp Eng/Comp Sys, but I'd like to go abroad as part of the degree as well.

    Hey FluffyUnicorn,

As far as I know, students in almost any undergraduate course in UL can participate in the Erasmus programme now, provided grades are up to scratch and that you're not in first or final year.

Erasmus is built-in to most AHSS courses along with a separate work placement so between the two of them you're usually away from UL for a full year. It's a bit different with most STEM courses, like the ones you've mentioned. I think those courses offer an optional Erasmus placement but this would probably be in place of your work placement programme (or at the very least, a shorter placement that just lasts the summer months).

This is how things were in UL when I studied there (4 years ago, so might have changed since). Erasmus is a great experience and really enjoyable, but placement is probably more beneficial in terms of turning your degree into a job down the line...

I'd say email the course directors or the Erasmus office to double check.

Thank you for such a comprehensive and helpful reply, I'll definitely email the office and ask about it. Would there usually be any opportunities to go on work placement abroad, or are all placements located in Ireland?

No worries. There are usually placement opportunities abroad for most courses so it's definitely worth enquiring, but I think they're limited so if you end up wanting that then be sure to check it out well in advance.

Of course, you always have the option of securing your own placement provided it's approved by UL, so if you had a particular organisation or destination in mind then you could work on it yourself.
