Is it ok to feed fat and meat to birds?

I have a birdhouse at the far end of my garden and there appears to be starlings coming in and out of it (I'm not sure if there's hatchlings there or eggs ready to hatch).

Lately, I leave out broken blocks of lard and fat, chicken, seed, homemade wholemeal bread and some water feeders that you'd give to rabbits (I have a few of them tied onto trellis).

Is all this OK to feed the birds? Should I leave out some materials for the birds to use for nests or is that necessary?

I love seeing the starlings around the garden.

    That's a recipe for Rats.

Meat is not a good idea. Fats are not ideal except in very cold spells. Bread is of little value to them. Seed, nuts and fruit are usual fare.

I put out meat occasionally, but it is for the Herring Gulls who hoover it up before any other birds get a look in!

I got a ticking off in work for feeding a Herring Gull every day during lunch break. Apparently on days when I wasn't around it took to mugging students:D
