Did anyone else get a data plug installed during a routine service at a VW dealer? What's the point of it? Is it used as a data harvesting tool for VW? Can it be removed? I wasn't even asked if it was ok to install it into my car.

You can get an app on your phone and connect to it to see info about your car. you should be able to remove it no problem its just an obd2 Bluetooth adapter

As above you can remove it yourself, you'll see it plugged in just above the pedals if you look under the dashboard.

It just relays some of your cars data to an app on your phone. Most of the info is a little useless, the handiest is probably where you parked the car. You can see some other things like the odometer reading, fuel level etc. It's a cool gimmic for free but it doesn't really do much.

yes but I reckon VW will be snooping into the APP to retrieve data on the car

Probably a useful tool to gather info about your motoring habits, then they can target areas of marketing to suit your requirements.
By asking your permission to fit it you probably agreed legally to it. But that's probably just my suspicious mind.

Maybe I'm completely mis-reading this but could it have been left in the socket by mistake? I'm presuming it's in the Obd socket below the steering wheel.
