Nut/ration mix to finish cattle

    Hi everyone

I have 3 AA heifers, 2 of which are small & need feeding up (2 year olds) & 1 heifer who will be 36 months in June so I need to finish her & send her to the factory before then.

I plan on separating the 3 of them & feeding them beef nuts. Should I add anything else to the feed eg barley or similar to bulk it out? They're still housed at the moment on silage. Prob won't see grass for another 3 weeks min here.

    Any suggestions/observations welcome!
    Thanks

I’ve never finished and animal ever, but I don’t think it’s beef nut you need.

You need a higher energy feed rather than protein.

There are rations specific to finishing, ask your local milk or merchant about them.

For small numbers like you have I find maize munch very good. 14% protein
can be bought here in Dairy gold at around 7.40 for 25 kg. much more expensive than bulk but ideal for what you need. Build up to 6 kg per head per day and in 40 days you ready to go

Aa will fatten quickly, if they were mine id buy a ton bag of 16% weanling ration throw all the heifers 4kg per day and the older one about the same in maize mixed in. if your short on grass dont bother letting them out and just keep feeding.

Turbo maize ration from liffeys mills is 6.50 a bag, serious tack. Been using it for most of the winter. 13% protein.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. I'll check them out & see what the local place has. Hopefully the rest of the bunch will be out soon, although looking at the rain this morn I'm doubtful
