Corrosion in the system can turn the coolant a very dark colour.

Are you saying the coolant wasn't black when you left Dublin or has it not been checked in years and the first time you checked was when the car arrived in Limerick?

None of those colours are great for coolant to be fair. Best thing to do is get the system flushed clean and filled with new coolant then go from there.

Ever longer ever worse. There's no way to say really but if you want it to last then it's really not ideal to have a sludged up or corrosion filled cooling system.

Any smell off it? Coolant is usually quite sweet, and there should be no sign or smell of oil. Hows the oil on the dip stick? What year is the car and how long was it left sitting?

EDIT: I think the coolant is red/pink in those... it may be that it is ancient coolant but I'm not sure.

The latest VW g13 coolant is apparently a purplish/violet color, likely the coloration you saw originally was from original VW coolant, and the brown coolant color is from either corrosion or the mixing of a different coolant into the system, either way flush and refill should help.

edit: some searching came up with a chart you can mix g11 (blue?) with g13 (purple?) which will give a yucky brown color which is acceptable, buit €I'd flush and refill anyway as brown looks ****e!
