LPT surcharge

    Hi,

Anyone else experienced a surcharge based on not 'filing' a return - acknowledgling the property price band that the governement placed you house in in 2013.

Friend got a notice of a sizable surcharge, not for not paying their LPT, which they have been, but for not 'filing' a return.

They don't remember receiving any correspondence that if they don't do this they face a surcharge.

There's a logical flaw here: if they didn't get the Revenue estimate then how did they know what valuation "the government" (i.e. Revenue) had placed on their house ? The estimate letter clearly stated: "Even if you consider that the amount shown on the Notice of Estimate accurately reflects your self−assessment, you should still complete the Return on that basis..."

So if they did get the Revenue estimate back in 2013, then the return would have been attached.

    From here:-

Revenue wrote to liable persons in 2013 to notify them of their LPT obligations.

For owners of single properties, Revenue issued both a:

    Notice of Estimate of LPT
    and
Form LPT1 - Return for Local Property Tax

Details of the surcharge are here: https://www.revenue.ie/en/property/local-property-tax/what-happens-if-you-dont-comply/local-property-tax-lpt-surcharge.aspx
