Hi all - see attached photo of an opening that I have a builder working on at the moment. We agreed with him that we would be putting in an internal window in the finished wall appox 400m wide and 1300mm high - originally planned for the middle. Over the weekend we decided we wanted to put this window on the far left of the opening and we we asked the builder to move the stud that is there 400mm to the right. He is refusing point blank saying that he can’t do it as it is a supporting structure. Now I’m no engineer but I don’t really believe this - if the stud is taking weight why can’t he just put a new stud of the same size in 400mm to the right and cut the one that’s there now? Does the exact positioning of the stud have to be that exact???

Have you told him that you don't expect it for free and are happy to pay extra for the work?

It's these extra where the real money is made. I'd assume if he won't move it for extra money then he really believe that it shouldn't be moved

Jeez that’s the nuclear option! But yes that would definitely be the real test of his convictions....

    Hang on.

You requested he move a stud after he put it up, due to a decision you made after it was erected..... And you don't want to pay for this extra work?

Please tell me I've missed the sarcasm in your above post

eh...not really bothered about the cost mate. Just want it done the way we want it - a few quid not a big deal

Ah that's OK then, crisis averted.

You'll pay to get it moved.

Ok great but does anyone tell me if thats a big job or just a case of getting two new studs and a nailgun and installing them in the middle of the ope, and then taking out the one thats there? It doesnt seem like a structural issue to me....

    What has your engineer said?

We can’t give structural Advice in this forum. But Let me ask you a question, is it 1 or 2no. 4’’ headers over the opening? If 2no. Would 2no. 6’’ headers work/line up with adjacent door heights?

You agreed something with the builder, and then changed your mind after he had completed the original request, and are here complaining. Leave it as it is, or pay the man to do it differently.

Your builder seems to prefer spending more time arguing with you than moving one stud...
    Laziness ???
