importing machine without EU certification

    Hi all,
i'm looking at a manure-spreader that is manufactured and sold in the US. I have been told that they cannot ship one to me since it does not have EU certification. However, the equipment would be for my own personal use, not resale (although i cant guarantee that i wouldn't sell it on if i no longer required it!).

So i'm wondering if there is anything in EU/irish import law stopping me from importing this item or not?

i'm only asking here in case anyone knows or has faced this situation before, rather than trawling through the revenue website for hours!

    Thanks, :)

Do you know anyone in the US? Get it shipped to them and get them to ship it to you. I know someone that did this with a chainsaw. Be mindful though that you may not be covered in the event of an accident, if the machine is not CE marked.

Be warned! You might think you have a bargain but you'll have customs to pay on top of that

You're right there but it wasn't so much that i was looking for a bargain, it happens to be exactly what i need and can't find anything as well built over here.

Check if the company has a different name in the EU?

Hi all, just in case your wondering the spreader in question is a compact manure spreader by ABI attachments: http://www.abiattachments.com/manure-spreader/abi-classic-manure-spreader-50-pto/

yes ABI do have a european outfit but they dont sell the one above over here.

Realistically it looks like it will be too costly and complicated to get one sent over. Unfortunately there doesnt seem to be much of a market for compact spreaders like this one over here (especially PTO driven ones), whereas a quick look at ebay US shows quite a few second hand ones even that would do the job.

I'm actually considering importing a similar thing from china at this stage, although it's a ground-driven one. Cheap and cheerful but might do me for while!

Available in Ireland, my dad had one. Get someone to weld a set of wheels and tow bar onto it if you don't have 3 point linkage??

i know the one! yes, i do have 3 point but only a small compact tractor... would want wheels anyway...

looks like i'll be going with something like this for now to get me going, leave the expensive rear-discharge ones for a later time if i feel like investing.

Thanks guys for all the links :)

It might be a lot cheaper for you to get a contractor in. He'd spread more in an hour that you would in a week with that

i know what you mean! i'm currently looking at a happy medium of a 3 cubic meter spreader that looks about the right size for me. I dont have a huge amount of land anyway and its a very old farmstead with narrow access so hard work getting big machines in. Added to this is the fact that i have some nasty boggy areas to cross which would get churned up by larger machines. What i'm trying to do is get the sod to the point it can support my compact tractor and gear by feeding and seeding yearly. It's getting there but i need a way to spread manure that is a bit faster than a wheelbarrow and a fork!

Going to look at a second hand spreader this weekend, hopefully just the right thing.

You'd be surprised. Big machines have big tires and tend to make less of a mess
