Hi I'm a novice with watches and looking to buy a watch for a big birthday for my husband.
Budget 1k...possibly can go slightly over
I could get a longines in hour passion outlet.

Can any recommend which is the better brand between

    Longines
    Tag heuer or
Gucci (seen one on sale in fields for 800ish)

    Thanks in advance

IMHO Longines would be my first choice in hour passion. Does he wear a watch everyday? You should be able to get a nice automatic Longines hydroconquest in hour passion for around 750 yoyo there.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Hour Passion do have a nice range of Hamilton too which are well worth a look

Thanks for the replies. Yes he would wear a watch every day. He would normally wear a brand like fossil. He is into watches but his dearest one would've cost 200ish

    Longines all day long

Another vote for Longines. Hamilton are a great brand, and part of the same family as Longines - but I think for a big birthday, a more recognisable brand is a good bet.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

And another vote for Longines here. In your budget of EUR1k some of their watches look like they are worth far than that. The Longines watch I had was cheaper in Kildare village Hour Passion than any other shop in Ireland.

Thanks for all the advice :)

Indeed, my hydroconquest chrono was cheaper in HourPassion than from the likes of UK online swiss watch direct places. I had a Kildare Village voucher too that gave 15% off the hour passion price but I reckon hour passion would knock 10% off for most customers anyway if you were in haggling form :)

I plan on buying my Dad something there for his upcoming 70th all going well.

Oh, I always am. And if I'm not, then I force myself to be :D

Regarding Gucci a general rule of thumb would be to avoid watches made by brands whose main business is making something else, clothes etc. It'd be like buying a car made by Nike, ordering French wine in a Chinese restaurant or having a Guinness in England.

Yes I did! I seen one around the 850 mark which was really nice.I think I'll go with that one. There was another one that was about 1500. I loved it but too dear.
The sales assistant told me they have 2 events each year, the first 2 weeks of May and 1st 2 weeks in November so I'm going to hold out for the November one :)
She let me take photos and said if they haven't got the one I want closer to the time then they can try and order it in.

Yes, pics please. I think they give 10% off over €1000 at those events, but you need to register with KV to get it. Their stock changes from week to week, so it can be pot luck.

Defo Longines for me too from that list. I also think you should consider going vintage. Dawson Jewellers have a nice selection. A vintage Omega Seamaster can be picked up for €400-500. there is a nice Omega Geneve on ichrono at the moment. I've never bought from iChrono but seems legit.

The blackface one was in my price range so this wasn't automatic and was 826. RRP 1240. Whiteface beside 1333 RRP 2K

I liked the white face one on its own but it was around 1500. It was automatic. Took a pic in case overtime came up in work in the meantime :) They said if I join private sale I'll get 15% off 1st 2 weeks in May and November. My sister has a friend who will get 10% kildare village staff discount. Not sure what I could get by haggling. Will try that when I've cash upfront.

Never thought about vintage. I must look into that.

Sorry, yes Irishgirl that one on it's own. If it wouldn't result in my divorce, I would be jumping all over that. Good luck in the search.

Yeah I really like that one. A bit over what I had planned to spend but took a photo 'just in Case' . I preferred that one to the cheaper one. It's just the money. Probably won't get it out of my head now :-)

Can they get you the cheaper one in white face style?

I've a blue face hydroconquest chrono auto that I bought two years ago in that shop. It gets many compliments and noticeable admiring glances.... I'm sure a quartz one would too :)

    Personally I'd buy a Movado.

Rang hour passion today. There's zero chance of haggling with them :/

Not too far away from the 15% off 1st 2 weeks November now though, there prices are quite competitive to be fair if they actually have something that you want.

The watch I like they only have 2 left. So it would be a gamble. Not sure if I should buy or chance my arm. Its Longines L36974766. It's 1553 with them I think. I can get 10% off that with a friends village staff discount. They wont give the 15% though.
Going to drop in today. I'd be raging if I didn't buy and it was gone. Difference in the 5% is a few quid though

the one on its own is my favourite of the 3

They look like a big chunky watch, I'd make sure size wise its not too big depending on your husbands wrist size

Thats the one Lax Luther! I went and got it today. Decided not to keep it as a surprise in case I picked totally wrong. He seemed very happy with it and looks lovely on. It'll be kept up for the birthday :)
They were not budging at all on the price but at least I got the 10% off in the end. Would've been raging if I left it to the sale and it went.
    Thanks for all your help

Great choice, the one on its own is a great looking watch, far nicer than the other 2 imho

Thanks I'm glad I went with that one in the end :D
