How long do you have to be a civil servant to apply for a career break?
I assume one must pass their probation but is there a minimum service needed?

    It’s two years.

    Thanks.
    That might just work.

What happens if I get a promotion on the open panel? Is it a case of starting from scratch or does my 2 years stand.

I believe it does stand, but I'm not sure if you could take career break while you're on probation in your new role (one year).

Nobody is going to give you a career break on probation, and I wouldn't utter a word about anything like a career break until you've got some service under your belt.

Your service will stand, but a career break is not an entitlement so you may not get it straight away. If you want to take another role in the public sector, you can't get a career break either in case that's something you're considering.

My thinking was more around mobility moves to another part of the country and rather than resigning and loosing a mobility placing, would a career break be possible to allow time for a move.
It was a discussion I was having with someone and neither of us were sure.

If you want a mobility move you can ask for one. There is a formal programme for this which you can apply for. Depending on what Department you're in you can potentially organise something informally also.

If you take a career break, you might have to wait up to 12 months after your application to return to get a posting. If the organisation doesn't have many vacancies, you might be in a position where you need to accept what they offer you or you're effectively resigning.

I would caution against taking a position you don't really want to facilitate something else which may or may not materialise.
