Hey so im 18, finished my leaving cert about a year ago, now while i do have some vague ideas what i want to do with my life, currently im in a bit of a bad position wich makes it difficult for me to get a common entry level job such as waiter or cashier aswell as going to a physical college with people is also a problem to me. So i was thinking about applying for disability allowance (as honestly i dont want to go on the dole as i feel that there are people who qualify for it more than me and i dont want to hinder anyone who actually needs it from getting it

so the thing is i am not irish, i have a non irish birth certificate, and according to the application requirements for the disability allowance, i have to end in the ORIGINAL copy of my birth certificate, the thing is i currently only have one official copy of my birth certificate and frankly if it were to get lost of something similar getting a new one would require a great deal of trouble on myhalf (aka going back to my homeland, applying for it, waiting etc) so i was gonna ask weather anyone has experience with applying with a foreign birth certificate and how quickly you got it back? and well weather or not my chances of getting disability allowance are hindered because of my foreign birth certificate?

Do you have an illness or injury that going to last 12 Months or more and your gp agrees

If you present yourself at your local social welfare office they will take a photocopy of your birth cert. They will not keep the original but they want to see it for themselves and therefore won't accept a copy that you provide.

You must have a disabling condition to qualify for disability allowance. Your argument about not wanting to take jobseekers allowance from someone more worthy is equally valid if applied to disability allowance. Such allowances are not limited in number anyway, you getting either allowance wouldn't block someone else from getting it.

The main thing is to be honest with them about your circumstances. They will determine if you are eligible for either jobseekers or disability allowance. If they determine that you are not entitled to disability allowance but that you are entitled to jobseekers, you must declare that you are actively seeking work and available for work.

I would get a photocopy of the birth cert certified by a notary public peace commissioner & send that. Attach a note to it explaining how difficult it would be to be replaced & offer to produce the original for inspection at your local welfare office.

Getting disability is not an easy thing.
Most people wait 12+ months to get approved for it.

You would need to show proof that you have an illness or disability that stops you being unable to work in the long term.

Also as far as job seekers go. You would be means tested against your parents and more than likely not recieve much or anything as the limit for someone of 18years old is 108 euro a week.

Just on the subject of the certificate - I have had to send away my marriage cert which, because of where and how long ago it was issued, would be pretty much irreplaceable, and was told that the cert had to be sent, notarised copies were not acceptable. I got it back safely and quickly on each occasion.

hey thanks for the info and while im aware that my chances of getting arents terribley great, the main question i have is weather my birth certificate is safe, and when i will get it back (as you said around 12 months) and honestly 108 is fine to me, im not exactly hoping for an amount of money to be able to live on as i am working on my problems, the money is more to give too my mother, as i feel bad for her having to provide for her 18 year old son

Fromwhat i remember you get your documents back shortly after they review your cas einitially, that takes up to 16 weeks at the moment or so im told. So youll be without your documents for 4-6 months, I had to send all original documents, they would not take a copy.

The 108 limit I mentioned wouldbe for jobseekers, which is means tested so tested off your parents so most 18 year olds tested on their parent srecieve little to nothing after the means test.

For disability you need to provide alot of proof that whatever illness your applying under stops you from working at all. Wrting letters describing how it effects your daily life etc, as well as note from your doctors, consultants letters also hold more weight.
As alot of Gps just sign the forms these days to keep patients happy.

They deny most people first time and then you need to appeal but all this can take 6months or so at least. And then appeals take just as long if not longer. And if you cannot prove that you are unable for any work then it is likely they will continue to deny you. (Ive known people with terminal cancer who were denied and had to fight it)

If you go to your Community Welfare Officer , they will witness and photocopy your original Birth certificate and send all the documents away for you. I have a foreign birth certificate so I know.

It took me about 2 years to be awarded Disability Allowance. I needed GP form plus Hospital consultant report plus another specialist and a visit from an inspector before I got it. I am over 60 years old which made it easier but for the government to pay your income for possibly the next 60 years or longer, you will need to make a very good case.

Sorry, I meant to say Peace Commissioner. That’s just what I’d do, an offer to produce original at a local welfare office would probably suffice.
