Replacing internal door sidelights with timber feature

Pic below showing bedroom door with side lights, however the glass just hasn't worked out because the sun shines straight in for about half the year (its a very bright hallway) and we've had to pin curtain lining on the inside to block out the light.

I plan to replace the glass with timber but can anyone suggest a nice feature instead of just timber painted the same colour as the door?

It seems a good opportunity to do something to creative, I googled decorative mouldings but didn't get much inspiration.

    Thanks.:)

CNC fretwork design would cut down a lot of light for you, and should be relatively
    inexpensive. Painted finish to suit.

It looks like you have enough space to switch to double doors there, which could look lovely.
