    Hi all my 01 Focus failed the NCT today. I wanted to ask here to get some idea of the cost of these repairs;
    • Bodywork: Primary structure corrosion / Door sills / (welding job)
    • Rear suspension system: Axle and wishbone bushes (Worm) (offside rear)
    • Rear suspension system: Anti roll bar bushes and links (Missing) (nearside rear)
    • Handbrake isn't strong enough

    Thanks very much

    To be honest unless you've a huge attachment to the car, it sounds like it's for the bin IMO.

    There's definitely more money to be spent on repairs there than you would have to spend buying another 01 Focus with an NCT test.

    Costs will vary wildly depending on where you price but I could see this setting you back €5-600 easy enough.

    Thanks for the replies.

    No attachment to the car, but I've had a run of getting cars with 1 year NCT and them being write offs by the time the NCT comes back around, getting pretty frustrating at this stage plus I spend €240 on a new starter motor not so long ago.

    I thought this one would be better as it belonged to a mechanic then the mechanic's friend.

    You probably need to take the approach that any car at that price point is a disposable car. Buy one for €1k ish with a new NCT, drive it until the next NCT and be prepared to bin it if it needs more than €250 to keep it going.

    The only exception to this is probably an old Corolla, but people will say I'm biased :pac:.

    why more than €250? Surely it's worth spending anything less than 1k to keep it going rather than having to replace it for up to 1k?

    I spent €450 on the car originally so not a big loss at all, but would like to get something that I can rely on for the next 2-3 years at least.

    It's just an arbitrary number but the idea is that you don't want to spend much more than €0 maintaining an item worth €0 that can be easily replaced.

    You should definitely look at a Corolla.

    I think it's difficult to get something you can rely on for €450. It's more a case of hoping for the best.

    no I'd say you are right, it's astonishing how many 96/97 Corollas I see around my locality/ Almost never see anything else of that age
