What's it like living with a Scirocco?

I'm looking at possibly getting a Scirocco - currently doing about 26k kms per annum (half open road - half suburbs, passing schools, etc.)

Just wanted to see if anyone has one - and what it's like in terms of maintenance costs, etc - am mindful that they are now no longer in production - are the parts bespoke to that model, or will they be easy enough to come by?

    Looking at a 2014 / 2015 model

It’s a relatively modern VW, based heavily on its sibling the Golf, so you should have zero concerns re parts availability etc!

Its essentially a 3 door Golf in a prettier dress. If you don’t need frequent access to the rear, great, otherwise you might need to look elsewhere.

Also be aware it was based on the mk5/6 Golf which is relatively ancient now in new car terms.

I suppose compared to an '11 focus, is it more expensive in terms of servicing, etc.........will the fact that it's not on the production lines any longer be an issue when I go to trade a Scirocco in in a few years time?

It won’t be any more expensive to service than the Focus. While it looks a bit different / special its essentially no more complicated than a Golf or a Focus so servicing and parts costs will be similar.

They should have a reasonably good trade value too imo.

Was chatting with my neighbour a couple of weeks ago about how she finds her Scirocco. Her biggest (and only) complaint was that it is very low to the ground which makes speed bumps and certain country roads more challenging.

Yeah as above they are essentially a Golf Mk5/ 6 so engine, suspension, brakes and most of the interior are shared components across most of the VAG range. In the nicest possible way it is a generic VAG product so parts availability will not be an issue for decades yet.

The 1.4 petrol ones can and do give timing chain issue amongst other things. The 2.0 petrol is less problematic but also less common, the 2.0 diesel isn't bad either unless you are a purist.

It has the usual coupe issues of impractically long doors, useless rear seats, compromised ground clearance etc but you probably wouldn't be looking at one if these were make or break issues for you.

Had one, until kids came along and needed access to rear seats!

thanks for the responses folks - in terms of my mileage, am I better sticking with the diesel model (looking at 26k - 30k kms per annum).......the odd country road, but mostly suburbs and motorway

so there's a 15 Scirocco (white) with 46k kms on it for the same price as a Focus ST line (172 - with 3k kms on it - choice of white or blue)...........opinions please!

The brother reckons the Scirocco hands down

Jeez I dunno! Focus is almost new and barely any miles? It's not really a fair comparison. The Scirocco is either very overpriced or the Focus has a great deal going on it.

I'd take the blue focus tbh.

How much is a scirocco when new? Wouldn't have thought at 2 years older it would be same price as those focus models.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

A new Scirocco diesel is €34k.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭Heres Johnny

A new Scirocco diesel is €34k.

In that case the 2015 one is probably not priced too badly. Bit steep when new though unless you put a big premium on the nice coupe looks, which is fine if you do.
I like it, a neighbour has one so I see it every day. Not a volume seller really unlike the focus, so has the little bit of exclusivity and rareness which is nice to have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

They are a bit expensive new alright.

I'd say your money would be safer in the Scirocco too though, they seem fairly resistant to depreciation, you still see 08-09 models selling today for the guts of €10k today. An 08-09 Focus is worth about €4k.

The Scirocco is bit of a niche model and it sold in small numbers. They are now no longer produced and not going to be replaced with a new model. They will always have a lower depreciation curve than the likes of a mainstream hatchback like the Focus especially with a new model Focus being officially launched in the next few days and Ford heavily discounting existing stock to shift them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭Killer K

For me, if I had the choice of having one of the cars on loan or as a replaement car for a week I would choose the Focus. However, as Bazz and others have mentioned, factoring in the depreciation element, I would go for the vw.

I would imagine as you were drawn to them in the first place, you prefer something that stands out on the road. The scirocco certainly has more head turning value than the focus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,354 ✭✭✭cjmcork

well folks..............I only bloody bought the Scirocco.........myself and the brother took it for a burn - what a nippy little kick the 150bhp is...........the most I've ever had is 90ps (paddy spec Focus and Mondeo)........got a decent deal on the Focus so I'm happy......reckon I might be doing a bit more mileage cos it's such an effortless drive - the 120km was like 60 in the Focus........

thanks for all the guidance - I'm collecting her next Saturday!!

Best of luck with it sounds like you like it a lot. 150bhp in a diesel with the torque will feel quick alright.

OMFG - I rang my insurance crowd on Saturday before I sat into the car to see if there was an additional cost on moving and was advised there wasn't............so I fell in love :-(

and now they tell me they won't insure it fully comp!!! Third party only...............

my mid-life crisis just became a crisis!!!

Call them back and speak to someone else. If no joy there request a supervisor and DO NOT come off the line until they put you through to one.

Did they give you a reason?

They've got terrible suspension. Siroccos eat the front tyres off them.
They all get ERG failures too sooner or later. And self destructing turbos.

    Well wear tho.

I am waiting for them to come back to me.....they said they don't cover that class of car to fully comp! Rang Chill....no issue insuring it but it'll be 700 ....I don't even mind that it's the wrong info from 123......I explicitly told the guy I was only driving the Scirocco if they would cover her......

collected her yesterday..........haven't been able to play with all the buttons yet, or decided on a name for her (!).........but she's on my drive and I'd consider building a wall with serious gates to make sure she stays there.............LOVE IT!

my focus had an engine malfunction on Friday..........bloody hell..........it was only a sensor, but I had to declare it before we did the handover yesterday!

Unless her car has actually been lowered then she's talking rubbish as they sit no lower than a Golf or Focus or any other car.

I have at 1.4l petrol model for the past 3 years. I love mine. Such a nippy car. I don't do the mileage to justify the diesel model but have had zero complaints.
Some insurance companies don't like them for some reason but ringing around you will get good deals.
    Enjoy yours OP.

Terrible suspension compared to what? The suspension would be slightly stiffer to suit the more sporty nature of the car, that doesn't make it terrible.

It's an egr valve by the way and they are as reliable as any other mk5/6 based model.

Mid-life crisis? Insurance companies saying no? What the hell...when did a VW Golf in a dress become a supercar?

Friend of mine had one for a few years and loved it, actually went down a year from a Golf to get one. Sold it last year for good money considering it had high mileage from what I remember.

Nice car but being an 09 didn't really have any features or tech compared to today. Firm but smooth suspension, not the most practical of cars if you have friends though. It's a prime example of why you don't have to have kids to need a 5-door car :P

I'd be interest to know if anyone else has had issues insuring a Scirocco as it's a Golf underneath and that's one of the best selling cars in the country?

Seriously tempted to buy a Scirocco as my first car, absolutely love the look them. Would be interested to hear feedback on how you find them to drive in terms of speed, comfort and general enjoyment?

I'm really not much of a motor head but looking for something with a bit of pace that's fun to drive. I've narrowed it down to either a Scirocco or a BMW 4 series M Sport but I don't really want to spend so much on a car I won't really drive too often, so I'm leaning more towards a Scirocco.

I see a few 1.4L petrol's on Cargiant which I might check out over the weekend. The only thing putting me off is I find the interior a bit bland and boring.

I gotta say, I love it - when you put your foot down, it just goes like an effing bullet...........buy a car that makes you smile!
