Range of speed camera

    I know this topic has been discussed few times, but I still wonder what is the range of a speed camera?

    I just saw a pic posted by Gardai on their Facebook page which shows distance of 492 meters. Please see attached photo.

    Any thoughts /comments?

    My rule of thumb is that by the time you see them, you're already tagged. Whether that is 100m or 492m doesn't really matter. That is almost half a kilometer away and if you can see clearly spot a person sized target holding a speed gun at that distance or further and without magnification in time to slow down then fair play to you. :)

    492 metres at that speed is only about 10/11 seconds distance!

    Its not a camera.Its a laser gun. It measures the speed the signal returns off a given object and calculates the speed of that object over a calculated distance.


    The technology can be calibrated up to 2000m for other applications but I'm not sure about the speed guns but I think 1200m is in use.

    That's a laser gun.
    Completely different tech (radar at an angle) used in speed vans.

    I did a bit of research into the speed van systems some time back. Now given the way they set up at an angle to the road and various other specifics, it became clear that you have to be absolutely right up close before they can get you, so close that if they catch you, you must be blind.
    I've carelessly driven far too close and braked when I thought it was a lost cause and still no ticket, hence my limited research into the system they use.
    The garda handheld is a different animal though and can get you from a long long way off.

    Ok i didn't know that gardai speed gun and speed van cameras have got different tools.

    Interesting to see speed gun has such a long range! While van cameras got 200 meters range only.
