Nerves driving without instructor

    Hi All,

I just completed lesson 6 with my instructor and I feel like these lessons are going pretty well, however I am terrified of driving without her!

I have attempted with a parent around a car park and that was okay, but having trouble moving off, I'm getting lessons in a diesel car and practicing in a petrol car, is there much of a difference? :o

How do I get over my fear of driving without my instructor? During my lessons I am driving well, I think - driving around my town and to neighbouring towns with not many issues and I feel comfortable doing so.

Petrol and Diesel behave totally different.

I would suggest if nervous or not totally comfortable yet to stick to the one type.

If you like the diesel or want to use instructor car then do so in that car.

Don't over think it but the biting point on the clutch will be different and every car will feel different especially in the above two different fuels.

    Hi,

Does your instructor have you rev the engine slight;y before finding the holding point ?

Diesel engines produce more torque/power at lower revs than petrol engines. Therefore a diesel engine may quite happily move off without any extra revs whilst a petrol engine must be revved slightly to generate sufficient power to move off safely under full control.

On your next lesson with your instructor, prior to moving off, rev the engine slightly before finding the holding point. . (Do a "Google" for "Tutorial video Moving Off")

Then when you go out with a parent you will have more confidence as you will not have the fear of stalling. Confidence in car control helps to calm the nerves.

    Best of luck.

Until you are more comfortable driving and have more experience switching between cars, why don't you do ur lessons in the car you will be doing your practising in? Most Instructors should be willing to do this.
