What is it that you really want to know OP?

I need to know about "Adaptive cruise control". On a vehicle with a manual gearbox how does it work if the vehicle has to stop or slow down. If I am approaching a traffic jam what happens? Will the vehicle still maintain the same distance from the vehicle in front and stop of its own accord? Or must I drop down the gears myself? Do I have to stop the vehicle manually?

So the Rav4 2017+ supports Autonomous/Adaptive cruise control
Great little video from one of my favourite youtubers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMYi3G7dkU4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEhy_IujX4o shows it in action with manual

So in short as I understand it - no, it doesn't do stop/start traffic. It will only work when vehicle is in motion at certain speed.
Pretty much like a regular cruise control but with the added bonus of adjusting its speed to the cars in front of you.

Pity really as traffic jams are a pain in the ass. So under a certain speed it will not work. Any idea what speed that is?

    20 miles/hour I believe

Cruise control was never intended for bumper to bumper traffic. One day maybe..

20 mph is for the honda. I see on a utub e video where someone is using a Rav in a traffic jam. It seems to start and stop.Automatic gearbox though. If you were travelling at approximately 25 mph with cruise control and a collision was imminent would the Pre-Collision System kick in and prevent a collision. Or even coasting in neutral .

Surely adaptive cruise needs an auto box or the whole point is missed. Our Volvo has the queue assist feature which works perfectly in stop start traffic.

The manual ones have adaptive cruise too.

Sure adaptive is better in an auto as it can do a lot more work for you but keep it in 6th gear in a manual and the car will cruise just fine.

If you are in a particular gear in a manual and it sense a collision the car will stall if you don't intervene in time. The sensor is also watching when you are not in cruise control and will still auto brake for you if necessary afaik.

It will disengage once below 50 KPH, or if you depress the clutch or brake.

Considering the minimum distance adaptive cruise control systems keep, using it in slow moving traffic would only invite people to change lanes in front of you, and cause the car to slow further to maintain minimum distance.

Same as my Civic, the Cruise control has no issues with going from Motorway speeds, to stop start traffic, and back again. Very handy for when the M50 is busy a car park.

Is it an automatic? You're saying the cruise control switches off when you slow down. Has it adaptive cruise control?

    Can anyone clarify the above.

Yes sorry, should have stated that it is Auto. Once enabled, the Adaptive CC never switches off unless you tap the brakes. It'll adapt to whats ahead, even when the car in front slows to a stop. You do have to tap the accelerator gently to tell it to begin moving again though. But it'll still be in Cruise and will accelerate with the car in front from there.

Not sure if relevant but there will be an all new RAV4 next year. Just to bear in mind if buying a new one.

Any idea what extra features will be in it. Presuming there will be.

NOt sure but you'd want to be getting a good price on the current model as the new one will affect residuals. The new one is a big departure from current model and much more in line with chr

Would it be safe to presume that diesel engines are gone for a long time to come. Any new Rav 4's could be hybrid petrol/ petrol only. I presume the same safety features will be on it.

They only released details at the New York motor show the other day so there isn't much info on it especially European spec models.

    A little more information here:

Anyone any idea what the fuel consumption is like on a Rav 4. As in mpg.

    2L diesel engine.

    Diesel: 7.35 l/100km or 38 MPG https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/49-Toyota/440-RAV_4.html?fueltype=1&constyear_s=2012&powerunit=2
    Hybrid: 7.27 l/100km or 39 MPG https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/49-Toyota/440-RAV_4.html?fueltype=2&constyear_s=2012&exactmodel=hybrid&powerunit=2

Not much of a difference really, but the hybrid will have lower maintenance costs in the long run. Adaptive cruise control will certainly be a lot more useful with an automatic. I'm certainly never going back to a manual - for normal driving it's pointless and I don't know why I put up with it for so long.

Fuelly is primarily yanks so you won't find many diesels there (site's working for me though).
