    I will be getting my house exterior painted soon...My painter tells me he will need a cherrypicker to reach the chimneys...
    I imagine two coats will go on in a day..
    Q: How much should I have to pay for cherrypicker hire..
    Thanks

    Different types of Cherry Pickers, different height reaches etc, different rates.
    Best off contacting your local hire shops for prices.
    You may need to check if you need an operators permit to use one and also check if whoever is using it has the correct public liability insurance for working at heights and to cover any potential damage.

    the delivery charges will kill you on such a short hire, all told your probably looking at €400 +vat

    the operator will need a CSSC or ticket that shows that theyve been trained, and I would also check insurances. If the guy doesnt also produce a safety harness, you should run him off. Anybody who takes the risks seriously has their own one

    Get a ladder and do the chimney yourself

    You don't need a ticket, only when working on a commercial site though some companies insist on them. I'm a painter and more often than not, put a roofing ladder up using my arm and having somebody hold the ladder below.

    Just to point out, if its a cash job, chances are, that there is no insurance whatsoever. It's not compulsory believe it or not. If he has the bona fides, then he most likely has clearance to work up to a height of 10m. (I'm fed up of cowboys drawing the dole, working for cash and undercutting genuine tradesmen)

    plenty of the ‘cowboys’ you refer to are not drawing the dole and are tradesmen.

    And if you do, it needs to be anchored etc.

    You can rent off likes of height for hire etc.

    Do it yourself or supply it for the day or 2.

    I paid €250 for one of the big diesel self leveling cherry picker last June. I had it for 24 hours and delivery was included in the price.

    I hired a self drive a while back, basically a boom mounted on the back of a Mitsubishi canter sized truck. No delivery charges as you collect from the hire company, and can be driven on a standard license. Think it was about 300-350, and that included insurance.

    Worked out well as it was a big site and the diesel ones are slow to move about, plus they usually arrive on the back of a large load loader which can be a hassle in built up areas..

    Simple to drive and use, just don't go full on Colin McRae on the corners with it :)

    thats incorrect this is taken from SI.291-2013 which is the legislation governing construction skills cards or"tickets" as you can see the last 3 include renovation repair and upkeep

    “construction work” means the carrying out of any building, civil engineering
    or engineering construction work, other than drilling and extraction in the
    extractive industries as defined by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work
    (Extractive Industries) Regulations 1997, and includes but is not limited to each
    of the following:
    (a) the doing of one or more of the following with respect to a structure:
    (i) construction;
    (ii) alteration;
    (iii) conversion;
    (iv) fitting out;
    (v) commissioning;
    (vi) renovation;
    (vii) repair;
    (viii) upkeep;

    If he's renting the cherry picker himself to use at his own home he doesn't need a ticket. If the painter is getting paid for the painting and is to rent the cherry picker himself, he will need a ticket.

    doesnt matter which one hires the cherry picker if the painter is being payed the home owner becomes the contractor and a ticket is required

    No they don't. It's not compulsory, although some hire companies insist on the operator having one.
