Advice around drastic change in work schedule

Hi all, posting on behalf of my partner who doesn't use boards.

They are a permanant full time employee in a scientific role in dublin with a multinational organisation, hundreds of Irish employees on the site in question.

My partner's standard work day begins around 9 and finishes at 5 (Mon-Fri), but recently there has been discussion about introducing work shifts beginning from 6am and ending mid afternoon, and others beginning mid afternoon and ending late at night. In addition to this weekend shifts have been mentioned to various members of staff as being required for everybody, but it all seems very informal and no proper communication is being made.

The department is short handed as is so extra staff will be required if these shifts go ahead, but it's been made clear that any external contractors brought in will be given the regular day shifts - and permanent staff will be expected to cover the wierd shifts (the reason being that contractors have to be paid a shift premium while contracted staff may not).

We've read the contract and to me it seems like this is a drastic change of conditions of employment. Mentions are made of potentially working extra hours outside the expected shifts but these are all referred to using language like 'from time to time' and 'on occasion', basically the typical covering your ass around overtime during busy periods.

I guess my question is does my partner have any recourse here or is the solution to reject the new terms of employment and seek a new job elsewhere?
