Painted over Wallpaper

My new flat has walls which have wallpaper that has subsequently been painted over. The end result being vertical lines showing through the paint where the sheets of wallpaper meet. Is there any way I can treat the walls to hide these joints before repainting, or will I need to remove the wallpaper?
