Advice on whether to sell car?

    Hey folks :)

As some of you know from previous threads i've a 2008 318D.

I've had an extensive amount of work done to it the last 6 months (with services, glow plugs, flywheel and clutch, brake pads and disks and all new tyres) plus I just put it through the NCT last week for a 2 year test.

I'd be keeping the car until I have paid off a loan which is looking like 18-24 months. The car will be 11 or 12 years old then so that's why i'm questioning changing up the years to something similarly priced. It currently has 114k miles and i do about 600km per week so will rack up.

I'm having an itch to sell it while I can get a good chunk of my money back ( Maybe around 5-5.5K private sale) and maybe get a 11 or 12 Focus or Megane diesel which will have better chance of selling/trading in in say 2 years time compared to a 12 year old car then.

Advantages of changing to one of those models ( lets say 5-6k value on a 11/12 one -

    -Cheaper tax
    -Cheaper insurance
    -Cheaper running costs
    -Cheaper parts to maintain
-Would be 20k - 40k less miles on it.
-More gadgets (I don't have bluetooth or parking sensors, not a must but adds to resale value)
    - Would be more sought after for a 8/9 year old car in 2 years time than a 12 year old one.

    Disadvantages -

    - I know my car inside out, it has some niggles (passenger door won't open and lights on bootlid don't work - didn't effect NCT) and i've put around 2.5k into it since October last year.
    - If I got another car something can simply go wrong and that too.

I'm just afraid ''what's next'' to go wrong on the beemer. The timing chain? More electrical problems?

Any advice or comments is welcome.

    Keep the car.

You know it inside and out as you say, you've just put plenty into getting or sorted to do similar mileage again and to be quite blunt, it's bonkers to be talking about trading that car for a diesel megane or similar.

    Makes no sense at all.

Yeah i'm leaning on that line too. Being too focused on resale value whereas it shouldn't be the priority!

    Thanks for your opinion.

    No worries.

If you're just bored with your car and can afford to change it, sure, go for it. Just seems to me like you're reaching for a financial justification for making a change when in reality, it's hard to see one that makes any sense. :)

You can always get a bluetooth module or Parrot kit with A2DP streaming fitted if that's something you'd really like. It'll cost a lot less than changing your car!

I'd say considering you've put some money into maintenance you're wisest course of action from a financial point of view would be to hold on to it and drive into the ground so that you get the best value out of it. Buying another car your are only buying yourself into more depreciation.

Some sound advice for the both of you, thanks! The more I look at it the more I see it as a stupid reason to get rid. I think I have my mind made up. Unless I win the lotto tonight :D

keep it, absolute no brainer. Look at what you have just poured into it! keep if for another few years... Its not just depreciation, its also cost of loan interest. Also you never get what you think it will achieve when it comes to selling!
