A few question about the EDT

    Hi,

Moved home to Ireland recently and started driving with my father a month ago. We drive most days. Did 20 plus lessons last year in major European city but failed test there. To some degree I feel like I'm starting again since the roads and drivers are SO different here.

I'd like to get cracking with the EDT, but have a few questions.

    1) I live 20 miles from Tullamore where I will eventually do the test. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do the EDT in my home town instead of in Tullamore? When I'm nearly ready for the test I will get some lessons in Tullamore.

    2) Do my driving skills need to be at a particular level before I should take the first lesson of the EDT?

    3) I passed the theory test 4 months ago. Can I take the EDT lessons over the course of just a few months if I'm at a high enough standard?

    4) How do the lessons work? Am I expected to prepare for the lesson and then use it to demonstrate that I meet a certain standard or does the instructor use the lesson to demonstrate to me before giving me a go? Can I fail an EDT even if the formalities like tax & insurance etc. are met?

    Thanks for your help,

    Barry

    1) No harm practising near to where you live, and closer to test time do some lessons in Tullamore.
    2) EDT allows you to start from absolute zero. There is no expected standard when you start, beyond having passed a theory test.
    3) You can do the lessons as quickly as you like.
    4) No prep needed at the start. You can practise what you've learned in between lessons, this will definitely help.

    Best of luck.

    1. I did like my first 6 lessons in my hometown when I was learning how to drive and then did further lessons in Naas (where my test centre is) when I was preparing for the test.

    2. No, they don't. I'm pretty sure I didn't even drive on my first lesson (or maybe just taking off in a car park)

    3. You can't sit your test until your permit is at least 6 months old. So, if your permit is new, spread them out over the 6 months. If you're over 6 months, do them once a week/fortnight and book the test as soon as you think you'll pass.

    4. No, no prep. Just listen to your instructor's advice and try and improve on the areas he/she pointed out before the next lesson.
