Ask for a better boiler in quote??

    Hi Everyone,

Daughter got a quote from a reputable local contractor to fit complete heating system. It seems like a good deal, although there is no brand info for the rads or hot tank.

    Glow Worm 18SX Boiler
    Danfoss TRVs
    Grundfoss 7M Circulating pump

7 Rads (2 of which are double panel) all 24" high.
Seem quite small to me, but I'm sure the guy knows what he's doing.
    eg...
    Hall Rad, SP 39"
    Living Room Rad, DP 35"

New attic tank (yep, that was requested to replace 40 year old gigantic circular tank)

    System flushed and Pyratox22 added.

Unfortunately, solution proposes to use "elements of the existing system" which suggests the under floor copper. I had suggested getting all the old stuff ripped out and replaced.

€5800 approx. 12 months warranty plus manufacturer warranty.

My own thoughts would be to go for a better boiler (eg WorcesterBosch) and pay the extra.

So, given that I'm completely unqualified to actually comment, does my idea about getting a better boiler have any value? should she look for complete replacement of pipework, some of it looks like microbore connected to a manifold (I saw it)?

Cheers and thanks ( especially if one of you is the contractor in question !! I appreciate that you're keeping her costs down)

    Glow Worm 18SX Boiler
    Danfoss TRVs
    Grundfoss 7M Circulating pump.[

Two concerns jump straight out at me..

1, The Glowworm SX range has a built in circulation pump, no need to be fitting an external one.
    2. No mention of a Magnetic Filter.

    Dang, my error.

Thanks K.Flyer for responding, as you have done, and very helpfully too, to my previous posts.

THe mention of the pump is actually part of a copy-and-paste from the Glow Worm leaflet (which is pasted into the quote ) - it does actually say that the pump is part of the boiler. But the way it was bullet pointed I thought it was a separate fitting.

there's a reference to a Fernox TF1, but its a 'recommendation' presumably a chargeable extra.

although I didn't mention it, the quote includes controllers.

So, he's not gammin' on, I misinterpreted the quote.

Its a company we've used before, as have members of our extended family. My only concern is that corners may be getting cut to keep prices down. I'd prefer to pay more and get decent quality - if necessary :D.

The hard part will be communicating to her anything I glean on here. Reminds me of myself when I bought my first home. Say no more!!

    Cheers

The TF1 is a very good filter as is the Adey Magnaclense Pro.
Personally I will not fit a boiler without a filter. On a new boiler installation the difference is usually just the cost of the filter.
Flushing the system should really be a power flush.
The Glowworm comes with a five year warranty, but it must be registered with C and F Quadrant Dublin upon installation making sure you have a RGII cert 2 and have it serviced and certified annually, otherwise the warranty is void.

Excellent. Thanks for the reply Kflyer.

I'll tell her that there's nothing to really concern her about the proposed solution, other than my own preference to do away completely with existing pipework and go for all new. And to get the filter.

You might recall that I was suggesting to her that a solution with manifolds fed from the boiler via unbroken pipework. As far as I know, that's not mentioned in the works being proposed. Heigh ho. Mine is done with solder joints under the floors upstairs and after 10 years there haven't been any problems, apart from a lot of green 'corrosion' visible round some of them (those I could see during recent work).

Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply and offer your expertise on here.
