I'm trying to strip down a mixer tap at home to clean it out, the lever is creaking when moving it, seems common that grit gets into the plastic mixer part over time and seems easy to clean. The attached pic is taken looking straight down from above the tap with the lever removed. The next step is to remove the silver ring at the top but it's too tight and perfectly round so no grip. There are 2 notches on the inside of it that suggest some tool is needed but I've no idea what, any advice please ?

To me in that pic it looks like that locking ring is crimped into the body of the fitting.

These aren't really designed to be serviceable like old taps were.

You'd be better off if you just bought a new tap and fitted a filter somewhere to stop it from getting clogged again.

Silly question but did you try removing the screw?

Yes, sorry, took pic as I was re-assembling after admitting defeat.

that looks like a spring clip. Difficult to remove that type if it is one. Small screwdrivers and plenty of patience is all I can recommend

We have those taps and one creaks occasionally.
Just liberally rub Vaseline around the top and reassemble, excercise it plenty and the Vaseline will work wonders.
